Hande Leimer Sips
I came across a series of articles written by a young American woman, Amelia, in Rome to become an Italian sommelier, with a group called Vino Roma. I was fascinated by her words which I share here.?
As I read more deeply into the Vino Roma site I was re-delighted by how a place like Roma and a liquid called Vino, can bring wonderful people, of very different cultures, together.
Think about it, Rome has got to be the home of upbringing, if not the birthplace, of what we now know as modern civility and artistry. Could you disagree? If not there where?
And Wine, is surely the drink of human fulfillment, that elusive state of being which we so enjoy. What better place and potation could there be for inspiring humanistic communion. It happens magically at Vino Roma.
Amelia, surely wiser than her years, pronounced and described her wine experience in the simple context of Looking, Breathing and Sipping to which I add Conversing. And here I converse with you.
Let's start with a remarkable woman, Hande Leimer, of Istanbul, Turkey. Tell me Hande, how did you come to Rome??
Hande is the founder of Vino Roma, a group dedicate to the exploration and enjoyment of Italian wine. Their studio and cellar is blocks away from the Colosseum, in the heart of Rome. Here they indulge and instill their guests with the wonders of Italian wine.
The Vino Roma team as I have hinted is of international lineage, Turkey, America, the Netherlands and Bavaria. Needless to say the people, excited wine novitiates and cognoscenti, who pass through their doors, are from all over the world.?
Hande was "born in 1970 in Istanbul, Turkey and grew up in a multicultural family. Her palate was trained from early on, first with food, later on with wine. She lived in the USA, Italy and Germany, before returning to Italy and settling in Rome." Vino Roma
She and her group are all certified with Associazione Italiana Sommelier (AIS) we have told you about how intentioned they are - Italian Sommeliers - Intent as Their Winemakers are Passionate
Seth Sherwood, writing for the NY Times in an article Revelations in High-End Rome? described Vino Roma as the "true intoxication ...yet to come." and described his time with Hande including the exploration of Vino Roma's "1,500-year-old cellar"...and see "bottles of a 1949 Primitivo."? Hey, save some of that for me.
Yet, while the Vino Roma people "love drinking wine but not being snobbish about it. You will, after seeing them "choose better wines when you know a little bit more about them." About Vino Roma Team
So the next time we are in Rome, we will be visiting Vino Roma, hope you do too.
