[Tuesday], in surprising fashion, the Venezuelan National Assembly authorized President Hugo Ch?vez to seek treatment for his ailments in Cuba, under Article 235 of the Venezuelan Constitution which says that any absence of more than five days from the country has to be approved by the Assembly. This is different than a temporal absence, in which the vice president replaces him. (Art. 234), which Ch?vez has refused to do ever since he started receiving treatment in Cuba for his mysterious ailment.

According to the letter sent by Ch?vez to the National Assembly, he will receive treatment in a hyperbaric chamber for ?oxygenation,? a treatment which according to the American Cancer Society is used for treating bone damage caused during radiation treatment [...]. Ch?vez has said that he has received chemotherapy, but has never formally acknowledged being treated with radiation, although there are rumors that this was the first type of treatment he received when the cancer was first discovered.

The timing is certainly unconventional, to say the least, as there will be important Gubernatorial elections on Dec. 16th. So far Ch?vez has been absent for most of the campaign, reducing his appearances in public since he won the Oct. 7 presidential election. [...]

Notice [in graph posted in original post] that Ch?vez has been absent publicly since about fifteen days ago and now he makes no public appearance to request the leave or as he is leaving the country. Reportedly, he is unable to walk more than a couple of steps at this time. Additionally, the request to be absent from the country was approved at an ordinary session of the National Assembly to ?celebrate? the 20th anniversary of the second coup that took place in 1992 and not one scheduled for the approval sought.

There are two important considerations at this time. First, the President of the National Assembly Diosdado Cabello read the letter, but also announced Ch?vez would be here on Jan. 10 to be sworn in as president, suggesting that he will not be here for the remainder of the campaign. This certainly will benefit the opposition, as Ch?vez personally will not be present to endorse his hand-picked candidates. Additionally, the electorate largely believed that Ch?vez had been cured from his cancer, with polls suggesting 80 percent of his voters believed the illness was not a factor to consider in the decision. This could benefit the opposition since the Oct. 7th election proved once again that it is Ch?vez that gets out the votes and generates excitement in the Venezuelan voters.

But more importantly (or ominously) it creates a number of possible scenarios which could complicate things in the next few months, depending on whether Ch?vez's condition represents an acceleration of the cancer he is suffering. First of all, if there was an absolute absence of the president-elect before he is sworn in, Article 233 of the Venezuelan Constitution says that the President of the National Assembly (Diosdado Cabello) will become President and elections would take place within 30 days. If the absence were to take place after Ch?vez is sworn in on Jan. 10, then the Vice-President (Nicolas Maduro) would take his place and elections would also have to take place within 30 days. Note that Ch?vez would have to appear to be sworn in on Jan. 10t in this scenario, as he has to name a new Vice-President after being sworn in.

For Chavismo [the left-wing ideology which supports the idea of subsidies for the poor and government control of productive assets like oil], this creates a complex situation, in which the party would have to choose a candidate within days, something which would be traumatic, to say the least, unless Ch?vez personally designated a successor, something that so far he has refused to do during his year and a half sickness. The opposition, on the other hand, is likely to choose Henrique Capriles after his performance against Ch?vez in the recent Presidential race.

Venezuelan dollar bonds rose sharply when the news was announced today, with most issues reaching historical high values. Investors clearly were betting once again that change may be in the air in Venezuela and a more reasonable economic policy will be implemented, independent of the side that wins were Ch?vez to suddenly disappear from the Venezuelan political scene.

Gaming Words: Celebrating Pong's 40th Anniversary | Wordnik

pong

pong, by Trevor Pritchard

[Photo: CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 by Terry Pritchard]

Forty years ago today, Atari released Pong, that ridiculously simple video game that paved the way for an entire industry and, for some, a lifestyle. In celebration, we?ve gathered ten of our favorite gaming words here.

chiptune

?Having germinated in the hacker stronghold of 1980s Scandinavia, chiptune music has become a worldwide scene with no clear geographical center. Perhaps the ultimate musical form for hackers, the international chiptune scene spawned directly from the cracking of copyright protection.?

Eliot Von Buskirk, ??Chiptune? Bands Blitz New York for Blip Festival,? Wired, November 28, 2007

Chiptune refers to ?a piece of computer music in which the sounds are generated and mixed in realtime, common in the 1980s before the advent of mass storage for prerecorded sound.? The term seems to have originated in the 1970s or 1980s.

Other video game music genres include fakebit, Game Boy music, bitpop, Nintendocore, and skweee.

frag

?And how does it feel, Julia,? Oprah Winfrey soon purrs, ?when you? what was that again? When you ?frag? someone??

Wagner James Au, ?Deathmatch: Julia Roberts-style,? Salon, June 23, 2003

To frag means ?to kill (another player) in a deathmatch computer game.? Deathmatch refers to ?a competitive mode found in first-person shooter games in which competitors attempt to assassinate one another.?

Frag probably comes from another sense of the word, ?to wound or kill (a fellow soldier) by throwing a grenade or similar explosive at the victim,? which comes from fragmentation grenade, ?a grenade that scatters shrapnel over a wide area upon explosion.?

griefer

?A griefer is a person who likes to cause problems for the sake of causing them. As the criminals of the virtual world, their goal is to make virtual life miserable for the other player. Depending on the environment, the mischief can come in the form of player killing, vandalism, player trapping or taunting.?

Nicole Girard, ?Griefer Madness: Terrorizing Virtual Worlds,? Linux Insider, September 19, 2007

A griefer is ?a player who plays a game primarily to reduce other players? enjoyment of it.? The terms seems to have originated in 2000 or earlier, ?as illustrated by postings to the rec.games.computer.ultima.online USENET group,? while griefing is older, dating back to the late 1990s. The word grief comes from the Old French grever, ?to harm, aggrieve.?

Related is ganking, in gaming, ?to kill, ambush, or defeat with little effort,? as well as ?to swindle; to steal; to copy, reproduce, reuse, or save an image, idea, or work of another person, often in the context of materials posted on the Internet.?

hack-and-slash

?Using an improved version of the conversation mechanism from Mass Effect 2 and battles that demand strategic thought alongside the more usual hack-and-slash technique of repeatedly battering the ?attack? button, Dragon Age 2 manages an impressive story to complement its more involved combat.?

Nick Gillett, ?This Week?s New Games,? The Guardian, March 11, 2011

Hack-and-slash refers to a game or movie that focuses on violence and combat. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the gaming term seems to have originated first, in the late 1970s, while the film term came about in the mid-1980s.

Slasher movie seems to be more specific than a hack-and-slash in that it depicts ?the activities of a vicious attacker whose victims are slashed with a blade,? says the OED. Slasher originally referred to snuff films, and came to its more mainstream definition in the 1980s.

ludology

?Game studies (or ?ludology,? as it?s known, from the Latin for ?game?), has spawned a new class of academics who devote themselves to analyzing how the wildly popular form of entertainment tells stories ? and what it reveals about how we express ourselves.?

Nick Wadhams, ?Academics Turn Their Attention to Video Games,? USA Today, February 13, 2004

Ludology is ?the study of games and other forms of play,? and comes from the Latin ludere, ?to play,? which gives us ludicrous, ?laughable or hilarious because of obvious absurdity or incongruity.? Game comes from the Old English gamen, ?game, joy, fun, amusement.?

XCU

machinima

?In the cash-strapped world of low budget movies, many see machinima as a cheap way of getting their ideas on screen. The technique involves recording footage from games consoles and editing shots together to tell stories.?

Peter Price, ?Machinima Waits to Go Mainstream,? BBC News, October 16, 2007

Machinima, a blend of machine and cinema, ?the rendering of computer-generated imagery using low-end (real time) 3D engines such as those found in video games, as opposed to the high-end, complex 3D engines used by professionals.? According to the OED, the word originated around 2000 and may be influenced by the word anime.

MMORPG

?Designing an MMORPG is a unique creative challenge. The initial game universe can take up to five years to build and often requires the formation of a complex mythology to provide and maintain its narrative thrust through future add-ons and expansion packs.?

Keith Stuart, ?World of Warcraft Cataclysm,? The Guardian, July 15, 2010

MMORPG stands for massively multiplayer online role-playing game, ?an online computer role-playing game in which a large number of players can interact with one another.? A precursor is the MUD, or multi-user dungeon, ?a text-based command line online game in which players may jointly engage in role-playing.?

nerf

?Across the roster the Japanese company has resisted the temptation to nerf powerful characters (Sagat and Ryu), and instead tried to make established lower to mid tier characters more viable.?

?Super Street Fighter IV Preview,? Video Gamer, March 22, 2010

To nerf means ?to water down, dumb down or especially weaken, particularly in the context of weapons in video games,? coming from Nerf brand foam rubber toys, known for being relatively safe. The opposite of nerf is buff, to make a character stronger.

pwn

??Some common [gaming] words originated as typos when people are typing fast during a game,? says Chandronait. A popular word used by gamers is ?pwn,? which means ?to own??as in ?you are better than? or ?own? another player. Chandronait suspects ?own? probably turned to ?pwn? because the p and o keys are adjacent on a standard keyboard, and gamers, during their quick typing, simply hit the wrong key.?

Anna Vander Broek, ?Gamer Speak for Newbs,? Forbes, April 23, 2009

Another popular theory of the origin of the word pwn is that ?the term originated back in the 1930s in the world of chess when a Russian competitor?s accent changed ?I will pawn to your knight? to ?evil pwn you tonight.??

zerg

?In some multi-player games, ?zerging? has come to refer to a gamer who, often against the game?s rules, creates multiple accounts to get an unfair advantage over other players.?

Doug Gross, ??Zerg Rush? Chews Up Google?s Search Results,? CNN, April 27, 2012

To zerg is ?to attack an enemy with a large swarm of units before he/she has been able to build sufficient defenses.? The word comes from the game StarCraft and its Zerg race of insects which operate ?as a hive mind. . .[striving] for genetic perfection by assimilating ?worthy? races into their own, creating numerous different strains of Zerg.?

As for what typing ?Zerg rush? into Google does to your search results, give it a try.

Solid E-mail Marketing Advice That Is Proven - Businesses

Many people reject the idea of email promoting because they equate it with spam. It?s a tough job to create email promoting campaigns that are engaging and get customers to buy, but it can be done. Read the following article to learn some strategies you can use right now to start an e-mail marketing campaign or improve an existing one.

When you create an marketing via email customer base list, make sure that your customer has a clear choice to be on the list. If you do not, people will view your messages as spam and simply delete them. Email providers often drop their subscribers if enough complaints warrant your removal for spam violations.

You should focus your email marketing efforts on your most promising customers. It is crucial to be persistent, while delivering a message your readers will find beneficial. If you are talking with the wrong people, they will simply become annoyed.

TIP! Ensure that you offer a simple way out for those who wish to unsubscribe or opt out of your mailings. While they are very inexpensive, each email does cost a bit of money.

The subject of you emails should be kept to a manageable length to ensure people actually read it. Many email providers cut off longer subject lines. Some of them simply can?t show longer than this. Regardless of why it?s important, your subscribers will only need to see that many letters in order to make a judgment as to whether your message is worth keeping.

Use A/B testing strategies when sending emails. Split your mailing list into two groups and mail one email with one subject line to one group and another to the other group. This is a great way to measure the effectiveness of each subject line, helping you to understand how to send out emails that get read.

Keep your customer in mind when you create a campaign to ensure it is effective. What is it that they will want to see? What would they want to read? Find a way to encourage people to buy your products. Use these answers to chart a course for yourself.

TIP! Email only customers who have asked for it. If you send messages to uninterested recipients, they may end up blocking them.

The Full Monty: SM North football coach Grayless resigns after 0-9 season

On the heels of the Shawnee Mission North football team?s first winless season since 1985, head coach Dennis Grayless is resigning his post after three seasons with the Indians, The Sunflower League Football Blog and smnfootball.blogspot.com reported Friday.

The Indians went 0-9 this year, capping a three-year stretch under Grayless in which SM North went 4-24. In its most successful season, in 2010, SM North won two straight in district play to advance to the playoffs but still went 2-8.

Sustained success has been absent at SM North since the departure of former coach Sam Brown in 2004, a stark contrast to sleek renovations on the stadium in 2006. The Indians won two district titles under Brown in 2000 and 2002, going 9-2 and 6-4, respectively and averaged six wins per season from 2000 to 2005.

Since Brown?s departure, the Indians haven?t won more than three games, once going 3-6 in 2008 under Ryan Majors. Majors and Grayless have gone a combined 11-53 since 2005, each resigning.

I caught the tail end of SM North?s latest run as a perennial playoff contender, graduating from the school in 2006. Since that time, SM North?s Sunflower League foes have passed it by. I covered the Indians? season opener on a humid Aug. 30 evening against Leavenworth. A 16-16 stalemate devolved into a 41-16 defeat after SM North failed to respond to a spate of injuries on its offensive line. Worse still, was the revelation by a pair of team leaders that multiple teammates had doubted their chances of winning before the season?s first game even started. I ran into an assistant coach weeks later, who also said a losing mentality prevailed in the locker room.

Check out SM North alum Adam Sullivan?s blog at smnfootball.blogspot.com, where former Indians quarterback Brock Burrows weighs in on the recent state of the program with some interesting comments.

That intangible will be hard to crack, but is step one in the program?s rebuilding process. In a feature on the rising costs of sports I wrote over the summer, SM North athletic director George Sallas talked about the difficulty of compiling deep rosters of multi-sport athletes as the surrounding attendance area continues to lag behind other district schools in terms of affluence.

This obviously, is something outside of Sallas? control. Right now, his focus will be on finding another new head coach to try and turn around a sagging program. I like Sullivan?s take on David Reichart, a teacher and assistant coach at SM North for years and a second-team all-league quarterback at SM West in 1991. Reichart has long been entrenched in the community and could provide a spark.

Still, don?t dispel the possibility of an outside hire. SM North?s wounds are deep, and a pair of outside eyes may be what Sallas thinks necessary to patching up the program and returning it to the health it once enjoyed.

Euro zone, IMF reach deal on long-term Greek debt | Firstpost

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund clinched agreement on a new debt target for Greece on Monday in a breakthrough towards releasing an urgently needed tranche of loans to the near-bankrupt economy, officials said.

After nearly 10 hours of talks at their third meeting on the issue in as many weeks, Greece?s international lenders agreed to reduce Greek debt by 40 billion euros, cutting it to 124 percent of gross domestic product by 2020, via a package of steps.

The deal should open the way for a major aid instalment needed to recapitalise Greece?s teetering banks and enable the government to pay wages, pensions and suppliers in December.

However, discussions were continuing on the methods to be used to lower Athens? debt burden, including a possible debt buyback and a lowering of interest rates on loans to Greece.

The euro strengthened against the dollar after news of a deal was reported by Reuters.

?It?s going very slow, but we have financing and a Debt Sustainability Analysis. We?ve filled the financing gap until the end of programme in 2014,? one official engaged with the talks said. A second official confirmed the figures.

Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras said earlier that Athens had fulfilled its part of the deal by enacting tough austerity measures and economic reforms, and it was now up to the lenders to do their part.

?I?m certain we will find a mutually beneficial solution today,? he said on arrival for the marathon talks.

Greece, where the euro zone?s debt crisis erupted in late 2009, is the currency area?s most heavily indebted country, despite a big ?haircut? this year on privately-held bonds. Its economy has shrunk by nearly 25 percent in five years.

Negotiations had been stalled over how Greece?s debt, forecast to peak at 190-200 percent of GDP in the coming two years, could be cut to a more sustainable 120 percent by 2020.

The agreed figure fell slightly short of that goal, and the IMF was still insisting that euro zone ministers should make a firm commitment to further steps to reduce the debt stock if Athens implements its adjustment programme faithfully.

The key question remained whether Greek debt can become sustainable without euro zone governments having to write off some of the loans they have made to Athens.

A source familiar with IMF thinking said the global lender was demanding immediate measures to cut Greece?s debt by 20 percentage points of GDP, with a commitment to do more to reduce the debt stock in a few years if Greece fulfills its programme.

To reduce the debt to 124 percent by 2020, the ministers were putting together a package of steps including a debt buyback funded by a euro zone rescue fund, reducing the interest rate on loans and returning euro zone central bank ?profits? to Greece.

Germany and its northern European allies have so far rejected any idea of forgiving official loans to Athens.

DEBT RELIEF ?NOT ON TABLE?

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told reporters that a debt cut was legally impossible, not just for Germany but for other euro zone countries, if it was linked to a new guarantee of loans.

?You cannot guarantee something if you?re cutting debt at the same time,? he said. That did not preclude possible debt relief at a later stage if Greece completed its adjustment programme and no longer needs new loans.

The source familiar with IMF thinking said a loan write-off once Greece has established a track record of compliance would be the simplest way to make its debt viable, but other methods such as foregoing interest payments, or lending at below market rates and extending maturities could all help.

The German banking association (BDB) said a fresh ?haircut? or forced reduction in the value of Greek sovereign debt, must only happen as a last resort.

Two European Central Bank policymakers, vice-president Vitor Constancio and executive board member Joerg Asmussen, said debt forgiveness was not on the agenda for now.

The options under consideration included reducing interest on already extended bilateral loans to Greece from the current 150 basis points above financing costs.

How much lower was still being debated ? France and Italy wanted to reduce the rate to 30 basis points (bps), while Germany and some other countries sought a 90 bps margin.

Another option, which could cut Greek debt by almost 17 percent of GDP, was to defer interest payments on loans to Greece from the EFSF, a temporary bailout fund, by 10 years.

The European Central Bank could forego profits on its Greek bond portfolio, bought at a deep discount, cutting the debt pile by a further 4.6 percent by 2020, a document prepared for the ministers? talks last week showed.

Not all euro zone central banks are willing to forego their profits, however, the German Bundesbank among them.

Greece could also buy back its privately-held bonds on the market at a deep discount, with gains from the operation depending on the scope and price. Officials have spoken of a 10 billion euro buy-back at around 30 cents on the euro, that would retire around 30 billion euros of debt, although since the idea was raised the potential gain has fallen as prices have risen.

FORGIVING OFFICIAL LOANS?

German central bank governor Jens Weidmann has suggested that Greece could ?earn? a reduction in debt it owes to euro zone governments in a few years if it diligently implements all the agreed reforms. The European Commission backs that view.

An opinion poll published on Monday showed Greece?s anti-bailout SYRIZA party with a four-percent lead over the Conservatives who won election in June, adding to uncertainty over the future of reforms.

German paper Welt am Sonntag said on Sunday that euro zone ministers were considering a write-down of official loans for Greece from 2015, but gave no sources, and a euro zone official said such an option was never seriously discussed. Lafayette businesses participate in the third annual Small Business ...

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Downtown Lafayette business owners opened their doors on what could be their biggest sales day of the year Saturday. There weren't long lines or any shopping hysteria, and that was okay for people eager to shop small.

"I'm all about supporting small businesses," Shopper Amanda Gill said. "If I can spend my money here instead of at the big box stores that is really what I'd rather do."

American Express held its third annual Small Business Saturday across the nation. It's a chance for local businesses to showcase their own sales after the mega sales of Black Friday. Walnut Street Traditions on Main Street was one business to participate in the event.

"We carry a line of unique Christmas trees [and] several ornaments," Walnut Street Traditions Owner Traci Bratton said. "We have our own line of candles we manufacture here in Lafayette. [The shoppers] can't find that anywhere else."

Just a block away Two Tulips got in on the Small Business Saturday fun by allowing their customers to personalize any piggy bank or ornament for free.

"[The customers] are just ready to shop and see what the store has that is unique," Two Tulips Owner Cheryl Woody said. "[They want] something they can't find at the mall."

It's those unique finds that business owners hope help give them a great sales day. Woody and Bratton said Small Business Saturday usually shapes up to be the best day of the year.

"Last year we were up by 68 percent from 2010," Bratton said. "We hope to exceed that this year."

"[The shoppers] met me at the door this year like they did last year," Woody said. "We've had a steady flow of customers all day long. I anticipate it to be just as good as last year if not better."

Although Small Business Saturday is just one day, owners hope people will shop small all year long.

UK's Osborne hopes Tucker stays at Bank of England

DEAR ABBY: I'm a 51-year-old man. Three years ago, my first and only marriage ended after 20 years. Over the past two years, I have been in a wonderful relationship with a very bright woman, "Toni," who told me she had been married twice before.A year ago, her job required that she move out of state, but we have successfully maintained the long-distance relationship with frequent visits and daily phone calls.A few days ago, I learned by chance that she was briefly married a third time while she was in her early 20s. ...

Putting Time-Management Websites to the Test

SPECIAL FROM Next Avenue

Geoff Williams

Here's what happened when I tried 4 sites that promise to make users more efficient

I am running out of time.

A full-time freelance journalist and author as well as the primary caregiver of two young daughters and a menagerie of pets, I often can?t find the time to do household chores, yard work or my own grooming.

(MORE: How to Be More Productive at Work in Less Time)

These days, I ask for an extension for almost everything, including paying my taxes and some bills. I even asked my editor for two extra days to complete this article.

Trying to Solve My Time Dilemma

So I decided to confront my problem (maybe you have it, too?) by testing four of the most popular time-management websites, hoping that at least one would show me how to squeeze more minutes out of my day.

Here?s the lowdown on the sites -- some are free, some charge depending on the features you use -- and my conclusions about them:

MyHours.com

Cost: Free.

How it works: Myhours.com lets you track how much time you spend on each work project. That can help you recognize who your most profitable clients are so you can free yourself from the others. You need to enter detailed information on all your projects, like their start and end times and which components you?re working on when; that can be pure drudgery.

Ease of use: A bit complicated if you aren't detail-oriented and data-loving.

Best for: Self-employed lawyers and other professionals who bill by the hour.

(MORE: Working From Home: The Good, the Bad and the Bottom Line)

My experience: You spend so much time figuring out how much time you devote to your projects that this site didn't seem like a big timesaver for me. I know writers who swear by it, but I was mostly lost from the moment I got there to the moment I gave up.

Toggl.com

Cost: Basic plan is free; the pro premium plan costs $5 per month.

How it works: You log in, hit Toggl?s timer, then click ?stop? when you finish whatever project or task you wanted to track. You?ll learn exactly how much time you spent on the project, which can be a plus if you?re continually being distracted by rogue emails or phone calls. The pro plan includes such features as integration with online work programs, like Basecamp and Quickbooks.

Ease of use: It's a cake walk.

Best for: Toggl is for anyone who wants to find ways to spend less time working on a computer. If you?re seriously obsessed with how you use all your non-sleeping hours, you could also use Toggl to track non-computer tasks, like how long it takes to clean the grout off your bathtub or cook dinner.

My experience: I don't really work well knowing that I'm being timed. But if you do, Toggl can train you to work more efficiently, since being timed forces you to think about your every move on a computer.

Unfortunately, in my case, I'm often doing online research on a topic and it's only nine clicks later when it occurs to me that I'm watching a video of a squirrel trying to navigate an obstacle course. To use Toggl successfully, you must have the mindset to click "stop" every time you're distracted and wind up doing something other than work.

That kind of dedication takes some getting used to. And for your Toggl teachings to really be helpful, I think you need to use the site for a week or two. That would give you a sense of how much time you?re spending on various projects.

If only there were a website that could help me see how much time I'm wasting on the Internet. Oh, now, wait a minute ...

ManicTime.com

Cost: The standard version is free. The professional version, with such extra features as the ability to generate timesheet reports, costs $67 a year. (ManicTime works only on computers with Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP.)

How it works: ManicTime measures how long you spend on a website, a Word document, an Excel file and so on. If you aren't on your computer, it lets you know that, too. Unlike some other programs, you don?t need to remember to start and stop a clock. ManicTime is always on, recording your activities. You can, however, manually time your work with the stopwatch feature of the professional version.

Ease of use: Can you turn on a computer? Manage to get to the Internet? You'll do fine.

Best for: People who spend most of their waking hours on a computer and want to reduce the time they waste on Facebook and watching squirrel videos on YouTube.

My experience: I loved ManicTime. It let me see exactly how much of my day I spent away from the computer, how long I was at various websites and even the amount of time I used my PC offline, like working on Microsoft Word files.

(MORE: How to Fit Physical Activity Into a Busy Daily Grind)

I now know that I spend about 57 percent of my day in the Firefox browser and 20 percent of my work time is writing. That?s OK -- online research and sending email accounts for a good part of that 57 percent. But it's sobering to be a writer and realize that only a fifth of my time is actually spent writing.

If you want to work more efficiently at your computer, it helps to have ManicTime?s data, rather than just guessing haphazardly.

FlyLady.net

Cost: Free. The site also sells FlyLady home cleaning products.

How it works: Home organizer Marla Cilley, of Asheville, N.C., calls herself the FlyLady and her site is all about saving time around the house. FlyLady will send you 10 emails a day (or one email encapsulating all 10), offering up things like meal plans, clutter-busting tips and even strategies on how to save time getting dressed. The website and its emails promote small steps toward efficient household management, encouraging you to not berate yourself when your house starts to look like an episode of Hoarders.

Ease of use: Setup is easy; execution depends on your drive and motivation.

Best for: Anyone overwhelmed by home chores.

My experience: The goodwill and can-do spirit on FlyLady.net was infectious. While I can't say the site revitalized the way my house runs (not yet, anyway), thanks to FlyLady I have some pork shoulder simmering in a crock pot as I write this and my kitchen sink is spotless.

Until I find an Internet tool that will actually cook, clean and do my work, I guess sites like ManicTime and FlyLady will have to do.

RolePlayGateway?

About Me: Hello, I go by the name of Toxica and I've been around here for a while I believe its a year or two? Anyways, I'm a bit different from a lot of fellow roleplayers here, or at least I like to believe I am, the reason I say that is that I tend to lean more towards the dark side of story telling. I have a twisted mind (I'm a fairly innocent person though) so my roleplays/stories tend to be a bit dark and I love when something horrid or crazy happens. I do joke around a lot and about 60% of the things I say is sarcasm, 20% are jokes, 10% is just crap that spills out my mouth that hold no meaning or I've given literally no thought on whatsoever, and the last 10% is a sincere conversation.

About the Story: The story takes place in the 18th century in a town called Wickersville. Normal life within the town changed once word of a the Black Plague outbreak caused the town to be placed into a quarantine. Whether planned or out of coincidence a serial killer decided this was the perfect time to unleash his/her killing spree resulting in the town to be condemned to death by the hands of each other, the plague, or the serial killer. With the situation worsening as the citizens themselves begin to turn on each other, a small group of heroic individuals attempt to find the culprit of the these murders. But this goal won't be so easy due to the fact that they must keep order, survive the wild witch hunts for the serial killer, find a way to tear down the quarantine, and keep from obtaining the plague. How much can weight can these people be burdened with before they snap? That is whatw e're here to find out.

About the Mechanic: As you probably guessed, this is a story that falls into the genre mystery and horror due to this I label this roleplay as mature. This will have a controlled sandbox environment allowing your character to do as they please, go where they please, and say as they please just keep in mind this is a realistic roleplay and there are consequences for your actions. This roleplay will be extremely interactive, you will be able to interact will any and all NPCs most, if not all, having their own characteristic and information. Also, keep in mind investigation is crucial especially since one of these citizens is the killer.

About the Roles: The roles that need filling are the 'Amateur Detectives'. These detectives are citizens of the town that have taken in interest in catching the culprit with the police support to an extent. Your characters can be a son, daughter, father, friend, girlfriend, etc. of anyone. The important thing is their actions form the start of the story to the end of it. Seeking Two More Roleplayers.

Story Progression: The roleplay have not commenced yet but so far there are two individuals that are interested and reserved two spots within the roleplay. All is needed is at least two more.

Thank you for allowing me to have a moment of your time, if interested place follow this link to the roleplay tab:

Las Vegas Real Estate Blog: Bank Foreclosures Start Again in Las ...

First, a little background:

Most large banks (Bank of America, Wells Fargo, etc.) are members of MERS, the Mortgage Electronic Registration System. This system allows a third party entity, like Recon Trust, to transfer notes between members of the system without recording the deed of trust into the new note holder?s name. So the name on the deed of trust and the name of the new note holder do not match since MERS was not required to record these documents. This made it difficult, if not impossible, for a homeowner facing foreclosure to actually find out who was foreclosing on them and try to work out an agreement. Many homeowners were foreclosed upon without ever being able to contact the existing note holder.
So in light of these national ?robo signing? scandals, Nevada was among 11 states that enacted legislation to protect homeowners and regulate illegal foreclosure activity. In Nevada, Assembly Bill 284 was passed which required a bank employee to sign an affidavit stating that to the employee?s personal knowledge all previous transfers of the note were correct before the bank could start the foreclosure process.
Since there is no bank employee that could possibly attest to previous transfers of a note, AB284 effectively stopped the Las Vegas bank foreclosure process in Nevada, and foreclosure filings dropped from around 6,000 per month to less than 1,000. (Not all banks were affected by AB284 since they were not members of the MERS system.)

In October of 2012, however, the Nevada Supreme Court ruled that banks using the MERS system would be able to foreclose on properties as long as the note holder and the name on the deed of trust matched prior to the foreclosure sale. ?This ruling will allow the third party entities used by MERS to record a deed of trust in the name of the current note holder and consummate the foreclosure process. Recording the deed of trust gives homeowners the opportunity to contact the note holder and work out a settlement, but doesn't allow them a "free ride" to stay in their homes indefinitely with no payment.

What this means for the Las Vegas real estate market:
The housing inventory has been at an extreme low for the past eight months, with bank owned foreclosures of Las Vegas single family homes accounting for only 10% of the active listings at any given time. Active short sales account for about 20% of the active single family listings and the rest are ?real? sellers. It?s a ?seller?s? market, prices have risen steadily since January, there are multiple offers on most listings within days of coming on the market, and buyers are finding it difficult to make a purchase unless they bid above appraised value. ??

Banks have started the foreclosure process again, and we do expect new inventory to begin?hitting the market after the first of the year, probably in or March or April. However, the banks do still have very stringent hoops to jump through, and there is no huge wave expected all at one time. Still, there should be more?listings on the market, allowing frustrated homebuyers the opportunity to finally get an offer accepted. Hopefully we will get back to a more balanced market that remains steady for the next few years. A balanced market is better for both buyers and sellers and the local economy.

Why Are Bigfoot Rumors So Persistent?

Sign on Pikes Peak Highway. Sign on Pikes Peak Highway

Photograph by Ashish S. Hareet/Wikimedia Commons.

Jeff Meldrum wants to search for Bigfoot by using a remote-controlled blimp. Because when you?re looking for a mythical creature famous for eluding all who search for it, a giant, buzzing, looming balloon is clearly the way to go. Meldrum, a tenured Idaho State University anthropologist who established his career studying primate foot anatomy before shifting his focus to monsters, expects he?ll have to raise $300,000 to get the project airborne. He?s trying (and so far failing) to get funding from private sources. (No surprise that his home institution wants nothing to do with the endeavor.) That?s a lot of money and effort for what will undoubtedly turn out to be a collection of blurry photographs that look like Instagram snapshots from a visit to the Pacific Northwest woods.

I loved reading breathless tales of encounters with the Yeti, Loch Ness Monster, Jersey Devil, Bigfoot, and other cryptids as a child, but those stories have never been supported by anything more substantial than an out-of-focus snapshot or embellished campfire story. And in the case of North America?s legendary nonhuman ape, the picture historians and sociologists have pieced together is that Bigfoot and other shaggy humanoids are cultural inventions that we have repeatedly conjured so that there?s always something wild and mysterious in the woods. Stories about Bigfoot began to proliferate after expeditions in the Himalayas in the 1950s reported ambiguous Yeti footprints?none of which have been convincingly attributed to a Gigantopithecus descendant or other prehistoric hominid holdover. Sasquatch fans have since done a bit of retconning by claiming Native American stories and dubious historical encounters as part of their mythology, but the trail is clear. Bigfoot is not a monster but a meme.

This hasn?t swayed the cryptozoological faithful. They are convinced that monstrous beings must be out there, just out of reach. If you browse the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization website, for example, you?ll find more excuses than hard evidence. Despite the ubiquity of smartphone cameras and the accessibility of camera traps, there are no clear photographs of the mythical ape. The site asserts that sightings are fleeting because Sasquatches are smart enough to avoid unwanted pictures, and photographers are often overcome by the ?initial confusion and/or fear during their sighting.? As for the lack of a body or bones: ?No serious work has ever been done to look for remains of surviving wood apes in areas where they are rumored to reside,? the BFRO website says, and blithely states that ?No one should expect remains of such an elusive species to be found, collected and identified without some effort.? Even for Sasquatch advocates, seeking the remains of their beloved legend is just too much work.

If Sasquatches were real, there would be ways to detect the creature?s existence. For one thing, there would be a fossil record of large apes moving into North America, probably from Pleistocene Asia. But fossil nonhuman apes have never been found in North America (the sole candidate turned out to be a misidentified peccary tooth.) Field biologists study elusive living species by using camera traps, analyzing genetic data from scat, and following footprints. There should be a wealth of compelling evidence from such sources?but all we have are an abundance of purported sightings. Given the number that Sasquatch clubs busy themselves with, I should be able to look out my window each morning and see Sasquatch families raiding my trash cans for leftovers. Bigfoot aficionados protest that they have found tracks, hair, and other evidence. But photos of mangy black bears and footage that would make even the director of Cloverfield nauseous from all the shaking show nothing more than a lack of rational skepticism.

For all the time that Bigfoot hunters spend in the woods and swapping stories, and considering their bluster at not being taken seriously, they seem to show no interest in approaching their subjects scientifically. Maybe Sasquatch hunters and other cryptid seekers don?t want to try legitimate, field-tested methods for tracking the objects of their fascination. Better to try unconventional, unsound methods like blimps?which keeps the possibility of mystery alive.

Bigfoot is hardly the only faith-based monster. Young-Earth creationists launch trips to the Congo in search of living nonavian dinosaurs and collect far-fetched accounts of living pterosaurs from around the world. If you?ve decided to ignore the entirety of science in preference for a 6,000-year-old Earth where Tyrannosaurus was created on the same day as Adam and Eve, I suppose the concept of an Apatosaurus crashing through the forests of the Congo Basin doesn?t seem so fanciful. And who could forget sea serpents? Even though many sightings of marine monsters were undoubtedly inspired by giant squid, seals, and other familiar creatures, amateur naturalists and ardent cryptozoologists claim that scaly, serpentine monsters still scull through the deep.

Not all monster sightings are hoaxes or hokum. In some cases, people are hearing or seeing something in the water, the night sky, or the woods. A faithful monster hunter is likely to interpret the snap of a twig or a strange aquatic shape as supporting evidence. It?s pareidolia, a wilderness Rorschach test.

One of my favorite creatures in the monster pantheon is Cadborosaurus. The monster got a lot of play in the books I picked up as a kid because there was a clear photo, even if the photo depicted nothing more than a partially-digested mess extracted from a sperm whale?s belly and slapped onto the dock of British Columbia?s Naden Harbor Whaling Station in 1937. The gooey string appears to be a creature with a horse-like head, sinuous body, and ragged tail flukes.

The carcass was most likely a decomposing shark. As the ?Montauk Monster,? ?San Diego Diablo,? and similar cases have shown, raccoon and opossum carcasses can be easily mistaken for aberrant creatures. Decomposition makes fools of us all.

Instagram Ads - Business Insider

The language in Facebook's new terms of service leaves the door quite open for ads to appear inside Instagram in the future, as pointed out in a tweet by tech reporter Christopher Mims.

Here's the key language:

"At this time, we're focused mainly on product development and are not pursuing marketing or advertising opportunities. This may change as Instagram grows and we expand our team, and we look forward to working with you then."

This one's a no-brainer. Of course ads will come to Instagram.

Instagram has amassed 100+ million users in two years. It's a beautiful visual service. Why on earth would advertisers NOT want to take advantage of that?

Caregiver Blessings at Thanksgiving

?Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.??? ~Marcel Proust

This seems like such a fitting quote as we approach Thanksgiving. As caregivers, we fall into our routines and do what it takes to get through the day. The road is bumpy, and it?s not for the faint of heart. On those occasions when we feel like burying our heads in the sand or running away from home, it?s easy to lose sight of our blessings.

Giving Thanks

The Thanksgiving holiday reminds us to step back from the chaos of day-to-day life and think about all that we have to be grateful for.? It?s a time to remember that while things may not be all peaches and cream, each day is filled with its own little miracles. As Mr. Proust so eloquently stated, it is often the people in our lives we are most thankful for.

This year, I feel indebted to the wonderful human beings who care for my mom day in and day out, happy days and not so happy days. They are our family in every sense of the word. For them, the job never ends. Even at the end of an exhausting 12-hour shift, they go home and worry about their dear ladies. I can only dream of displaying the patience and selflessness that they show every single day.

Faithful Family and Friends

I?m also extremely blessed to have the most wonderful daughter a mother could ask for. When my head is going in a million directions and I?m at the height of worry and frustration, she brings me back to earth with the wisdom of an old soul. She?s a source of strength, she keeps me laughing, she?s my voice of reason, and most importantly, she makes me want to be a better person.

While we?re talking about family, I would be remiss if I didn?t mention my dad. Living four hours away, he gets the short end of the stick but never complains. Knowing that he understands why I have to be here with mom helps to take some of the weight off my shoulders. He?ll never know what a gift that is.

My blessings continue with the best, most supportive, understanding friends in the world. These are the people who graciously allow me to cry on their shoulder when I need to, always have a hug to spare, and would truly do anything for us. When I?m with these people, I can be me ? the good, the bad, and the ugly ? without fearing that they may walk away when times get tough.

In addition to amazing friends, I?m thankful to have a compassionate, supportive work family. They?ve seen me at my best, and they?ve seen me at my worst, tears and all. Whether I need a shoulder to cry on, a sympathetic ear, or someone to cover a meeting for me while I run off to handle an issue with my mom, they are there.

My Inspiration

Finally, I?m grateful for the woman without whom I wouldn?t be here. I feel like my beautiful mama has taught me as much about life and love in the past six years as she had as I was growing up. Without even realizing it, she?s taught me patience, hope, and faith. She has helped me realize that I?m stronger than I think I am. She?s taught me not to take anything for granted and has shown me how to appreciate every tiny, beautiful moment that we share. She?s shown me that when you treat people with kindness, it comes back to you tenfold. And most importantly, she?s taught me to love at a level I never knew possible.

I hope you?re able to take some time this week to count your blessings. Even when circumstances are far from perfect, we can find things to be grateful for. Here?s wishing everyone a beautiful, safe, and blessed Thanksgiving.

Dr. Ernesto Torres, director of the Centro Medico trauma center, talks to reporters about the condition of former boxer champion Hector ?Macho? Camacho in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012. Camacho was clinging to life Wednesday after being shot in the face while in a car in his hometown of Bayamom. (AP) ? The family of Hector "Macho" Camacho tried to decide Wednesday whether he should be removed from life support after a shooting in his Puerto Rican hometown left the former boxing champion clinging to life and his fans mourning the loss of a dynamic and often troubled athlete.

Doctors at the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan found that Camacho had irregular and intermittent brain activity late Wednesday, said Dr. Ernesto Torres, the center's director.

"We can't declare him brain dead," he said. "We're going to ask the people of Puerto Rico to keep praying."

Torres said doctors will conduct additional tests early Thursday but warned the prognosis remains dire.

"The changes have been more negative than positive," he said, adding that Camacho does not have enough blood coursing through his brain.

Doctors initially had said Camacho was in critical, but stable condition and expected to survive after he was shot Tuesday night in the city of Bayamon. But his condition worsened overnight and his heart stopped at one point, Torres said.

The 50-year-old Camacho was shot as he and a friend sat in a Ford Mustang parked outside a bar. Police spokesman Alex Diaz said officers found nine small bags of cocaine in the friend's pocket, and a 10th bag open inside the car.

Camacho's mother, who flew in Wednesday from New York, will lead the discussion about whether he should be removed from life support, said Ismael Leandry, a longtime friend and former manager who was also at the hospital.

"We just have to wait to see if 'Macho' gets better. It's a hard battle," Leandry told The Associated Press as he joined friends and family outside the emergency room.

Torres said Camacho's mother, Maria Matias, spent about 20 minutes with her son, one of the most dynamic boxing personalities of his era, and was expected to return for a second visit on Wednesday night.

"His mother came and she is devastated," he said. "She knows the prognosis is not at all favorable."

A godson, Widniel Adorno, said the family has discussed the possibility of organ donation but no final decision has been made.

Camacho's friend, identified as 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, was killed in the attack. Police said two assailants fled in an SUV but no arrests have been made and no motive has been disclosed.

Camacho was rushed to Centro Medico, where doctors initially said the bullet passed through his jaw and lodged in his shoulder. Torres said the bullet damaged three of the four main arteries in his neck and fractured two vertebrae, which could leave him paralyzed if he were to survive.

Steve Tannenbaum, who has also represented Camacho in the past, had been told earlier by friends at the hospital that the boxer would make it.

"This guy is a cat with nine lives. He's been through so much," he said. "If anybody can pull through it will be him."

Friends and family members waited anxiously at the hospital, fondly recalling Camacho's high-energy personality and his powerful skills in the ring.

"He was like a little brother who was always getting into trouble," said former featherweight champion Juan Laporte, a fellow Puerto Rican who grew up and trained with Camacho in New York.

Camacho has been considered one of the more controversial figures in boxing, but also popular among fans and those who worked in the sport.

"The Macho Man was a promoter's dream," renowned promoter Don King told AP. "He excited boxing fans around the world with his inimitable style. He was a nice, amiable guy away from the ring."

King had promoted Camacho but was caught off guard by news of the attack on the former champion. "What a tragedy this is," he said. "I'm very sorry for Hector and his family. My prayers go out to him."

The fighter's last title bout came against then-welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya in 1997, a loss by unanimous decision. He last fought in May 2010, losing to Saul Duran. Tannenbaum said they were looking at a possible bout in 2013.

"We were talking comeback even though he is 50," he said. "I felt he was capable of it."

Camacho was born in Bayamon, one of the cities that make up the San Juan metropolitan area

He left Puerto Rico as a child and grew up mostly in New York's Harlem neighborhood, one of the reasons he later earned the nickname "the Harlem Heckler."

He went on to win super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s.

Camacho has fought other high-profile bouts in his career against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard. Camacho knocked out Leonard in 1997, ending what was that former champ's final comeback attempt.

Camacho has a career record of 79-6-3.

In recent years, he has divided his time between Puerto Rico and Florida, appearing regularly on Spanish-language television as well as on a reality show called "Es Macho Time!" on YouTube. In San Juan, he had been living in the beach community of Isla Verde, where he would obligingly pose for photos with tourists who recognized him on the street, said former pro boxer Victor "Luvi" Callejas, a neighbor and friend.

"We all know what Macho Camacho has done, but in the last couple of months he hasn't been in any trouble," Callejas said as he kept vigil outside the hospital. "He has been taking it easy. He's been upbeat."

Drug, alcohol and other problems have trailed Camacho since the prime of his boxing career. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison for the burglary of a computer store in Mississippi. While arresting him on the burglary charge in January 2005, police also found the drug ecstasy.

A judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail, though, after violating that probation.

His wife also filed domestic abuse complaints against him twice before their divorce several years ago.
