Visionary Instruments intros the Robocaster MIDI hybrid guitar, we go ears-on (video)

Visionary Instruments intros the Robocaster MIDI hybrid guitar, we go ears-on (video)

Visionary instruments has been tinkering with the not-so-humble guitar for a long time now. The latest offering is the Robocaster MIDI guitar. As you can see from the picture above (or gallery below) the Robocaster offers some features you might not find on your average axe. Those arcade style buttons, the MPC style pad faders, touch-strips and digital whammy-bar send out MIDI data to the software of your choice. The set-up at NAMM had the Robocaster routing through Ableton Live, meaning that effects such as gating, filters -- or essentially anything -- can be lavished on your playing in real-time. The guitar is customized by hand, and make use of our good friend arduino. As Visionary Instruments has been modding guitars for a while, it's no surprise that the finish and build quality looked and felt excellent. The additional controls sit snug in the body, and are designed to be easily accessible while playing. The Robocaster, despite being hand-made, will be ready for ordering within a week or so with an estimated price somewhere around $2,799. That said, if orders or interest are sufficient, the could be scope for a full production run, coming in at a lower price. Want to make this happen? Check out the firm's website and get your order in. Just want to know how it sounds? Better get on the video after the break.

AP Source: Obama picks Mary Jo White to lead SEC

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama will nominate Mary Jo White to lead the Securities and Exchange Commission, tapping an attorney with broad experience in prosecuting white-collar crimes to lead an agency that has a central role in implementing Wall Street reform.

A White House official said the president would announce White's nomination during a ceremony in the State Dining Room Thursday afternoon.

At the same event, Obama will renominate Richard Cordray to serve as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the official said. The president used a recess appointment last year to circumvent Congress and install Cordray as head of the bureau. That appointment expires at the end of this year.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss the nominations ahead of the president.

White spent nearly a decade as the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, building a reputation as a tough prosecutor with an expertise in pursuing white collar crimes and complex securities and financial fraud cases. White House officials say that experience makes her well positioned to implement Obama's Wall Street reform legislation.

While serving as U.S. attorney, White also won convictions related to the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

If confirmed by the Senate, White would take over the helm at the SEC from Elisse Walter, who is serving out the rest of former SEC chair Mary Schapiro's term. Schapiro resigned in December.

Cordray has run the consumer bureau since last year, when Obama used a recess appointment to install him in the job. Senate Republicans had opposed Cordray, as well as the concept of the consumer bureau.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., first conceived of the idea of a consumer protection bureau. Obama considered naming her to lead the bureau, but her nomination would likely have run into deep opposition on Capitol Hill.

White, 65, currently heads the litigation department at law firm Debevoise & Plimpton.

She was the first woman to hold the position of U.S. attorney in Manhattan, one of the most prestigious positions in federal law enforcement. During her tenure from 1993 to 2002, White won convictions of white-collar criminals, drug traffickers and international terrorists. The most notable was Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

She also led the prosecution of mob boss John Gotti when she was acting U.S. attorney in Brooklyn in 1992. Gotti died in prison in 2002.

If confirmed by the Senate, White would be the first prosecutor to head the 79-year-old SEC. Most SEC chairmen traditionally have come from Wall Street or the ranks of private securities lawyers. The choice of White is likely intended to bolster the agency's enforcement profile in the aftermath of the financial crisis.

White's background differs sharply from Schapiro, who stepped down last month after guiding the agency in the four years after the crisis. Schapiro worked at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the securities industry's self-policing organization. Some consumer advocates have said that Schapiro's experience as CEO of FINRA made her more likely to seek compromises and less likely to aggressively pursue misconduct.

During Shapiro's tenure, the SEC reached major settlements with the biggest banks on Wall Street, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and Citibank. But critics said the penalties were small compared with the banks' revenues. And they complained that no senior executives were held accountable.

White would be expected to give high priority to expanding the enforcement efforts.

At the same time, much of the pressing work facing the agency involves writing new rules. The SEC is seeking stricter rules for money-market mutual funds and must get into shape the so-called Volcker Rule, which would bar banks from making certain trades for their own profit.

As head of the litigators at Debevoise & Plimpton, White has represented a number of financial institutions likely to have crossed swords with the SEC in enforcement cases. Her clients also included former Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis, whom she represented in a 2010 civil lawsuit by then-New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo accusing Lewis of misleading shareholders in the bank's merger with Merrill Lynch.

White also represented the largest U.S. hospital chain, HCA, in the insider-trading investigations by the SEC and the Justice Department of former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, whose family owned HCA. The investigations were closed in 2007 with no charges filed against Frist.

Planning a Gluten Free Day Out By Harvey Mcewan | Food and Drink

??

If you or a family member suffer from coeliac disease or other conditions that make you gluten intolerant, it is worth setting aside some time to plan a safe, gluten free day out which will not limit you or leave anyone starving due to a lack of access to gluten free food. Spontaneous day trips can lead to unpleasant situations such as not being able to order a suitable meal.

Start the day with a filling breakfast to keep your energy levels up so you do not have to stop at a roadside cafe with a limited selection of foods. Gluten free porridge works a treat. Sprinkle on some seeds and nuts, and swirl in a dollop of honey for a healthy, hearty treat to prepare you for a day out. Alternatively, toast a few slices of gluten free bread and top off with your favourite jam or savoury topping.

Nowadays, many cafes and restaurants will either feature gluten free dishes in their menus or be able to offer a gluten free alternative upon request. This makes it a whole lot easier to spend the day outside your home as you needn?t worry about not being able to find somewhere to have breakfast, lunch or dinner. Even bakeries and tea rooms are likely to offer at least one gluten free cake or pastry so treat yourselves to elevenses or afternoon tea.

If booking a table in advance, which is advisable, particularly at weekends, let the staff member know about your special requirements and they will ensure the kitchen is prepared in advance with gluten free products stocked and ready for your arrival.

Sadly, some places have been slower to respond to the needs of gluten intolerant foodies. This is particularly true in small villages and towns with limited supplies. Also, some foreign countries are less aware of gluten intolerance.

Alternatively, in nice weather it is always lovely to have a picnic in the great outdoors. Fortunately, there is now plenty of gluten free food which comes in convenient packaging to slip into your picnic basket or backpack.

Oatcakes make a nice alternative to bread and come in pocket-sized packaging. Bring along some homemade dips like hummus, taramasalata, salsa or guacamole and fresh, pre-prepared vegetables to dip into the sauce for a light, refreshing but energising snack. For a little something heavier, pack some lunch meats but be careful not to keep them outside the ice box or fridge for too long in hot weather. This applies to the dips too.

Mike Hill, Jennings Police Officer Of The Year, Makes Autistic Teen His Backup Deputy (PHOTOS)

One police officer has an autistic teen saying, "I've got your back."

The pair star in a viral Facebook post that has been shared more than 300,000 times since Monday. In the photo, Jennings Police Officer Mike Hill stands next to Blaize, whose mother, Angie Richard, wrote in the post:

Blaize is an 18-year-old old autistic child with mental disabilities. His dream when he turned 18 on July 28, 2012, was to become a police officer. The best I could do was get him the outfit and call JPD to surprise him.

So she called to ask about a special visit for Blaize, and right away, an officer showed up to their Louisiana home.

"They pulled it together real fast?Blaize was the happiest 18 year old I have ever seen!" Richard wrote on Facebook.

After that, Blaize visited the police headquarters with Hill, his new hero and one of the department?s most beloved cops. Afterwards, Richard wrote:

Blaize had his visit at the JPD and got a tour that put a smile on his face from ear to ear!! He received a certificate and a special JPD coin.

"Since that day, Mike Hill has come to our home on 3 different occasions just to visit his 'backup,'" Richard wrote.

During the latest visit, Hill brought a police calendar for Blaize that included photos of all the officers.

The Richards aren't the only ones taking notice, either. This month, Hill was named Officer of the Year.

Mustachioventures: More of Marshall's Irish Pub

I am dogged by the luck o' the Irish (bad luck) when it comes to getting invited to food tastings and freebies all these bloggers I read about get to enjoy, but then again I never was and never will be a food blogger. I just like to eat (and write about it if and when the food, whether good or bland, induces some inspiration), that is all. And so I have abandoned all freeloading hope.

Then out of nowhere (not exactly nowhere, but by some six-degrees-of-separation kind of luck) I get to take part in an Irish Pub's food tasting. Like a leprechaun who has found a pot of gold, I leap with glee. Woohoo!

At Marshall's Irish Pub, a long table was set up with green-capped bottles of water and flutes of champagne waiting for the tasters.

It started off on a high note (who wouldn't be excited to taste Irish Pub fare for free?) with Larry Marshall, evidently the owner of Marshall's Irish Pub, taking the singer's seat by the entrance with a microphone in hand (the pub has live acoustic music every night at nine). Not to sing but to welcome the invited guests and to talk about how the pub came to be and what is served here.

So how did the pub come to be? Larry found there was only one Irish pub in Cebu and it was located in the edge of the city. Too far for all you urbanites. To bring Irish fodder closer to the city dwellers, in June 2012 Larry opened his gastropub at Century Plaza Commercial Complex in uptown Cebu.

Marshall's Irish Pub possesses a 75-item menu featuring the many ways you can have your potatoes (the Irish equivalent to rice) and some not-your-everyday restaurant food, such as crocodiles and ostriches. We don't normally encounter crocodiles and ostriches in menus around Cebu, but at Marshall's Irish Pub it is also proudly announced on each table.

The pub's food tasting extravaganza, which we later on realized really was an extravaganza in the true sense of the word, started off with the appetizers. Five appetizers served dish by dish.

Hot N Spicy Platter

Buffalo shrimp, jalape?o poppers, Buffalo wings

?Potato Platter

Potato skins, chili cheese fries, spiced potato wedges

Seafood Platter

Fried shrimp, fish sticks, calamari

Crocodile Bites

Shrimp Cocktail

The platters were tasty. I like spicy food so the Hot N Spicy platter (Php 665), especially the jalape?o poppers, is my favorite of the batch. Then it's a tie between the Potato Platter (Php 340) and Seafood Platter (Php 685).

The Pub boasts of serving fries that come from the US. It does taste better than the fries you get from fast food?restaurants here.?Although I?don't?mind what country the fries come from, one thing's for sure, my appetite?isn't?xenophobic.?Moving on, the potato skin was a fairly new twist to potatoes. I'm liking the idea that the cheese and ground meat made it look like a slice of pizza. The chili cheese fries tasted less spicy, or maybe because my taste buds tolerated the sting since I had jalape?o spiciness still lingering in my mouth. The wedges were also good, but I can't rave about it now for I have tasted the Pub's potato wedges a couple of times before.

The Seafood platter did get a lot of good murmurs from the other tasters. The fish sticks were soft, and the fried shrimp was tasty crunchy. I hesitated to try the calamari since I'm not fond of?munching hard rubbery food. But theirs was soft and chewy. The only negative comment I heard was that the calamari was "near raw".

My first time to eat croc meat. The crocodile bites (Php 395) taste like fish but with a consistency nearer to pork minus the grease. I overheard that the best part of crocodile meat is its tail. Before I forget, the calamari and crocodile bites were beer-battered using the famous Irish?Guinness Beer.

I like shrimp. I love shrimp. Unfortunately, the shrimp cocktail (Php 345) did not appeal to me. Enough said.

Wait! There's more. After the appetizers, came...

Irish Stew (beef)

Shepherds Pie

Baby Back Ribs (full rack)

I found the Irish stew (Php 495) very peppery but it worked for me. The lamb in shepherds pie (Php 695) was tough...or maybe I was just lucky? Lucky to have picked the tough piece. I was never fond of lamb so I might be biased here. The baby back ribs (Php 990 for a full rack, Php 495 for half) was...okay. By that I mean I've had better.

When Larry announced there was more on the way, the high note slowly dwindled to a less enthusiastic murmur from the bloggers around me, not because the food was unpleasant but because it was too much. Stomach gauge needles were now dangerously near the full mark, and the pub was barely halfway thru with serving the main courses (they were serving us ten main courses on top of the five appetizers!). Larry, the owner, should have warned us a day or two before, and we could have skipped breakfast and lunch on food tasting day.

We plowed on.

?Country Fried Steak

Ostrich Steak

Grilled Lamb Chops

Ostrich Burger

Shamrock Cheeseburger

The Ireland Dip Sandwich

Chicago Chili Dog

By this time I could only take in one-inch square of each. First, the one-inch square of country fried steak (Php 695). I liked its gravy and the wheat bread was wonderfully fluffy. As for the supposed star of this dish, the beef tenderloin steak, hmmm...it wasn't too tender if you ask me. At this point, please do not trust my judgment. I am near the full mark and cannot fully relish the bounty before me.

The ostrich steak (Php 695) and the ostrich burger (Php 425) made me appreciate ostrich meat, but my pockets, if I get ostrich meat cravings, will hate me for this. It is expensive. The lamb chops (Php 695) were fine; I liked it better than their baby back ribs, though I shouldn't compare pork and lamb.

The last four dishes served were sandwiches, all paired with potatoes. The shamrock cheeseburger's (Php 395) a hefty 1/3 pound of ground beef. The dip of the Ireland dip sandwich (Php 595) is beef broth. Chicago chili dog's (Php 245) hotdog is pure Angus beef.

There were some hits and some misses in terms of taste. For the price, the Pub's not for me, an average-earning worker. I found everything too expensive. But, hey, the servings are huge! Platters, of course, were meant to be shared among four persons. The stew, shepherd's pie, and full rack of ribs looked like it could feed up to four. The rest can be shared by two.

Lastly, since this is a pub we are talking about, I should mention that Marshall's Irish Pub has more than a dozen imported beers on the shelf. If you're one who doesn't stray from local beer, those are available too. Drop by for happy hour from 4PM to 7PM for discounts on selected local beers. If beer isn't your drink of choice, the pub's got your back. Would you like a cocktail, mixed drink, liquor, or wine, lad?

Marshall's Irish Pub
Unit 41, Century Plaza Commercial Complex
Juana Osme?a St., Cebu City
(032) 412 6418 / 0917 631 2413
Daily 10AM to 3AM

How Larry Marshall generously fed fourteen people:

Zero. Nada. Nil. Thank you Marshall's Irish Pub for the colossal treat. According to my calculator, for the hefty food alone (10 appetizers and 20 main courses for the entire party), it would have cost about Php 18,500 including the 10% service charge.

Keen On? Injustice: What The Aaron Swartz Case Says About The American Criminal Justice System

Screen Shot 2013-01-22 at 2.57.05 PMThe Aaron Swartz tragedy has unleashed an intense debate about computer "crime" and the US criminal justice system. Heavyweights like Lessig, Doctorow, Greenwald, Masnick, Wu and Kerr have all written with great passion about the case. But the one article that really resonated with me was written by the Harvard Business Review blogger James Allworth.

Cease Paying For Pricey School Books ? Bnr.Co

Students everywhere are left standing at the campus bookstore counter, shocked and feeling sick at the cost of books for a single semester of courses. $500, $600, $700 or much more, gone just like that ? for a set of books that they will use when, perhaps twice if they are lucky enough to take another course that requires the very same material. This is not to say that education is not worth the investment or that these books are not beneficial. Indeed, they are ? nevertheless it does not lessen the pain of forking over numerous hundred dollars for books.

With the advancement of online schools, distance studying and more, yet another development is producing life less difficult for students. Ebooks allow a student to obtain a registration and have access to textbook components for an allotted amount of time. Ebooks are idea for numerous causes. Initial of all, they expense considerably significantly less than printed and bound books. The savings is a lot more than sufficient purpose to motivate students to leave behind their traditional books and purchase all their understanding components through eBook subscriptions.

Second, ebooks weigh, nicely, absolutely nothing. There is no heavy load of carrying around 500 pages of Algebra books when all the information is neatly saved in a weightless file on your pc or stored on the internet for you. When taking a full load of classes, 15 or 17 hours of classes can really begin to add up when it comes to the weight of all those books. No student likes lugging around a heavy bag of books from one finish of campus to yet another, especially when one has a restricted amount of time to get among classes. The weightlessness of online books is a fantastic perk of saving cash and getting online book access.

Another benefit of ebooks is that you will not have to stand in line ? ever. As your classmates rush and wait in endless lines, hoping to get in the bookstore in time to locate a handful of nice used books to acquire and then repeat the process at the finish of the semester to sell books back and recoup a small bit of the price, you can get out a lounge chair and relax. When you register for ebooks, you do not have to wait in line, don?t have to wait on shipping and will not have to go through the hassle of trying to sell them back.

Are there disadvantages to ebooks? Effectively, it depends on your learning style. Some people just prefer to have the physical book in front of them and are accustomed to understanding this way. It could help your photographic memory techniques if you are searching at a conventional book versus an electronic book. We are all somewhat numb to on-line internet designs and only notice when one thing truly stands out ? so if you find it difficult to retain knowledge you read on the internet, then ebooks might not be for you.

Yet another con may be that if you wanted to preserve the book for reference later in other courses or even in your profession, then ebooks do not usually offer that opportunity. Of course, bound books can frequently become outdated or irrelevant, so the risk of missing out on getting the right details in front of you at a later date is really slim. Right after all, you can discover the info again online later.

'Facts of Life' star Rae: My husband was gay

Chelsea Lauren / Getty Images

By Us Weekly

Definitely sounds like a bitter "fact of life" to swallow. Now 86 years old, Charlotte Rae is known and beloved by TV fans as Mrs. Edna Garrett, the widowed, maternal woman looking after Jo, Blair, Tootie and Natalie on classic '80s sitcom "The Facts of Life." But before she became a TV star, the actress dealt with some very serious real-life heartache.

PHOTOS: Out and proud stars

As she writes in her memoir "The Facts of My Life" -- currently being shopped around to book publishers -- Rae's 25-year marriage to composer John Strauss ended in 1975 with a shocking confession: Shortly after the couple had moved to Los Angeles, Strauss told his wife that he was gay and had cheated on her.

"First came the shock of what he had done behind my back, then the sting of being deceived for years," Rae, who wed the "Amadeus" soundtrack composer in 1950 and bore him two sons, writes (as excerpted on Page Six). "All I could feel was the betrayal and, worse than that, my shame."

PHOTOS: Meltdowns of the year

The admission shattered Rae's self image, she admits. "John's secret confirmed my feelings of inferiority.... That I was less than a woman.... That I didn't deserve to be loved and valued." Strauss passed away in 2011 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

PHOTOS: Biggest cheating scandals ever

A multiple Emmy and Tony nominee, Rae first appeared as Mrs. Garrett in the first season of ?"Diff'rent Strokes" in 1978 before landing a spin-off series in "Facts of Life"; "Diff'rent Strokes'" elder star, Conrad Bain (Mr. Drummond) passed away last week at age 89.

Obama Inauguration Video: President Addresses Thousand During Celebration

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), the top Republican on the Budget Committee, was not impressed with President Obama's claim in his inaugural address that the country's entitlement programs "do not make us a nation of takers."

The line was a reference to the election campaign in which Mitt Romney infamously said that he was not campaigning for the 47 percent of people who don't pay federal taxes, and in which he accused Obama of trying to "gut" the 1990's welfare reforms.

Sessions, who largely agreed with Romney's positions, took that line and others as a sign that the president will not take steps to curb the costs of Social Security, Medicare and other expensive programs.

"They ran all the way to Election Day campaigning, attacking Republicans who 'want to take your Social Security,' and it was successful," said Sessions just after the inaugural ceremony.

"He's gotten reelected, the country's still on an unsustainable debt path," said Sessions. "If he says 'No,' we probably won't have any entitlement reform, and he can put it on his tombstone that he refused to alter Social Security and Medicare and put either one of them on a sustainable course."

Obama has proposed trimming an additional $300 billion to $400 billion from health care programs, and has floated the possibility of shifting to a stingier measure of inflation to slow the growth of Social Security. Sessions estimates the move would cut $250 billion over 10 years, which he said is not enough.

"You want my opinion about the president's greatest failing of all, that dwarfs every other failing -- he will not tell the American people we are on an unsustainable course, and we have to change," Sessions said.

He found the "takers" line in Obama's speech revealing.

"I would say they're a little sensitive about it," Sessions said. "Because we're on a path to spend about $10 trillion on social programs the next 10 years, $60,000 per family that's below the poverty line -- that's how much we spend for these means-tested programs. And there is a danger of dependency. To be honest, the president should recognize that."

The debate over welfare and the 47 percent played out against the background of an economy that has created the greatest level of income equality in America since before the Great Depression -- a fact Obama took notice of in his remarks.

"We do not believe that in this country freedom is reserved for the lucky, or happiness for the few," Obama said. "We recognize that no matter how responsibly we live our lives, any one of us at any time may face a job loss, or a sudden illness, or a home swept away in a terrible storm. The commitments we make to each other through Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security, these things do not sap our initiative, they strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great."

There Are Still Some Bears Out There!

bull bearMost real estate analysts are rather bullish on the housing market right now. Sales, pending contracts, prices and new construction starts are all up. The Home Price Expectation Survey released last month revealed a sense of optimism among the experts surveyed regarding home values over the next five years.

However, not everyone is buying into belief that housing is in a full-out recovery. There are still a few bears who do not believe housing is out of the woods just yet. One such bear is Radar Logic. In their RPX Year in Review released last week, they shed new light on two data points which have recently shown improvement.

House Prices

?From November 2011 to November 2012, the RPX Composite price increased 9.2 percent year over year, but this increase reflects a significant shift in the composition of home sales and overstates the appreciation in individual properties.?

House Sales

?An increasing share of sales activity has been driven by institutional investors rather than households. While the 25-metro-area RPX transaction count increased 7.6 percent year over year, monthly investor purchases increased 75 percent year over year. The bulk of these purchases occurred in a handful of markets hit particularly hard by the housing bust: Miami, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Atlanta.?

Radar Logic concludes:

?Some commentators suggest that investor-driven home price appreciation could spur demand among housing consumers, which will in turn bring about a broad-based and sustainable recovery in the nation?s housing markets? It is hard to see a direct connection between the current increase in institutional demand and future gains in household demand, especially at a time when traditional buyers are faced with high down payment requirements and tight standards for mortgages.?

It will be interesting to see whether the few bears are correct or if the bulls, who are definitely in the majority, are proven correct.

Blackberry App World store makes early switch to Blackberry World, but no music or video yet

We're still a few days away from BB10's genuine debut, but RIM's decided to press on early with its app store changes. Starting with the webstore front (which is rolling out in the next 24 hours, depending on your territory) then moving on to the PlayBook and existing BlackBerry phones, the renamed BlackBerry World store will also offer up access to videos and music -- RIM reckons it'll be your "one-stop shop" for mobile entertainment, but those channels aren't live just yet. Test out the store's new offerings at the source link to the right.

The Difference Between Autoresponder Programs and ...

Many newcomers to the Internet marketing arena are not aware that there is a vast difference between an autoresponder program
and an autoresponder service. Not knowing the difference, they often purchase the wrong type of autoresponder, and find out too
late that they have wasted money on a program that is useless to them.

An autoresponder program is a program that is set up on your web server. This is usually a free autoresponder that comes with
your web hosting account. Many people don?t like to use autoresponder services; so instead, they use an autoresponder program
that they have more control over. Some of those people don?t like the autoresponder programs that come with their hosting
accounts either and purchase autoresponder programs or scripts that must be installed on their web server.

Other people are quite happy with using an autoresponder service. This is a service that is usually paid for on a monthly or yearly
basis. The fees are ongoing, and everything is browser based. In other words, you can set up your autoresponder messages and
manage your opt-in list through your web browser ? just as you can with an autoresponder program that is installed through your
web hosting account. The difference is that the service runs on the autoresponder service?s web server ? not yours or your web
hosts.

Beginners are usually better off using an autoresponder service. These services are very easy to understand and to use, and no
technical knowledge is needed to set things up. As a newcomer to the field, however, you might be concerned about the costs of
an autoresponder service. If this is the case, you have the option of signing up with a free autoresponder service.

Free services make their money by placing advertisements in each autoresponder message that you send out. Sometimes these
ads appear at the top of your messages, and sometimes they appear at the bottom. Some of the free services are simply an
enticement to purchase the professional version, and have many of the more advanced features, such as tracking, disabled.

More advanced users often choose to use autoresponder programs, simply because they have more control over the autoresponder,
and they don?t have to follow some of the stiffer rules imposed by autoresponder services, such as sending confirmation to each and
every person who is entered into the autoresponders list.

The autoresponder that you choose is strictly up to you, but in most cases, an autoresponder service should suit your needs. If
you are unsure, look for a service that offers free signups, with the option of upgrading to the professional paid version at a later
date.

Slow Cooker Mince

by mediocremum on 20/01/2013

Bit of a laugh yesterday, the team from Netmums sent around a film crew. ?They?re starting a parenting channel on youtube and would like to highlight food for all the family.? They asked if I could knock up a few Slow Cooker recipes that kids would eat. ?In the end, I did Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs, Mince and Macaroni Soup, Sausages with Chutney Gravy and a Banana Bread.? It was really food fun.

I do public speaking everyday and am a fairly confident character and genuinely thought I?d be comfortable in front of the camera but I wasn?t.? Once I see the final version, if it?s not to cringe worthy I?ll pass on the link.

I wasn?t going to post a recipe yet, but, the cooking marathon has resulted in a huge amount of food in the house.? We went sledging today and it was so nice to come home to some hearty soup that helped us unthaw! ?So, I thought I?d share it.

Surprising connections between our well-being and giving, getting, and gratitude

Jan. 19, 2013 ? We all know that getting a good night's sleep is good for our general health and well-being. But new research is highlighting a more surprising benefit of good sleep: more feelings of gratitude for relationships.

"A plethora of research highlights the importance of getting a good night's sleep for physical and psychological well-being, yet in our society, people still seem to take pride in needing, and getting, little sleep," says Amie Gordon of the University of California, Berkeley. "And in the past, research has shown that gratitude promotes good sleep, but our research looks at the link in the other direction and, to our knowledge, is the first to show that everyday experiences of poor sleep are negatively associated with gratitude toward others -- an important emotion that helps form and maintain close social bonds."

Social psychologists are increasingly finding that "prosocial" behavior -- including expressing gratitude and giving to others -- is key to our psychological well-being. Even how we choose to spend our money on purchases affects our health and happiness. And children develop specific ways to help others from a very young age. Gordon and other researchers will be presenting some of these latest findings at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) annual meeting January 19 in New Orleans.

Sleeping to feel grateful

A large body of research has documented that people who experience gratitude are happier and healthier. In three new studies, Gordon and Serena Chen, also of the the University of California, Berkeley, explored how poor sleep affects people's feelings of gratitude.

In the first study, people who experienced a poor night's sleep were less grateful after listing five things in life for which they were appreciative than were people who had slept well the night before. The researchers adapted the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, which measures sleep quality and number of hours slept, among other variables, to evaluate the previous night's sleep.

In the second study, participants recorded their sleep from the previous night for two weeks and their feelings of gratitude. The researchers found a decline in gratitude associated with poor sleep, and those participants reported feeling more selfish those days.

The final study looked at heterosexual couples and found that people tend to feel less grateful toward their romantic partners if either they or their partners generally sleep poorly. "In line with this finding, people reported feeling less appreciated by their partners if they or their partner tends to sleep poorly, suggesting that the lack of gratitude is transmitted to the partner," Gordon says.

"Poor sleep is not just experienced in isolation," Gordon says. "Instead, it influences our interactions with others, such as our ability to be grateful, a vital social emotion."

Giving away money to feel wealthy

Just as expressing gratitude confers benefits, so too does giving to others. New research shows that people all around the world -- from Canada to Uganda, from South Africa to India -- derive more happiness from spending money on others than they do on themselves.

"For the first time, we show that giving away money or spending it on others confers the ironic psychological benefit of increasing the giver's sense of wealth," says Michael Norton of Harvard Business School and co-author with Elizabeth Dunn of the University of British Columbia of the upcoming book Happy Money: The Science of Smarter Spending. In a suite of new, not-yet published, studies, Norton and colleagues showed that charitable giving makes people feel wealthier.

This research follows on other recent work published in Psychological Science by Norton and colleagues that shows that giving time to others -- from helping with homework to shoveling a neighbors' driveway -- actually makes people feel that they have more time. "In fact, giving time away alleviates people's sense of time famine even more than receiving unexpected windfalls of free time."

That people feel wealthier from spending money on others may explain why poor individuals tend to give away a higher fraction of their income than members of the middle class do. In one study, researchers reported that Americans earning less than $20,000 a year give a higher percentage of their income to charity than others earning up to $300,000 a year.

"Our results suggest when the poor give money away, that very act might mitigate their feelings of poverty," Norton says. "More broadly than this specific benefit, our investigation contributes to the growing body of research documenting the benefits of prosocial behavior, which include greater happiness, reduced mortality, and better immune function."

Buying experiences to feel happy

In related research, psychologists are finding that spending money on experiential purchases, such as vacations, concerts, and meals out, tends to bring us more happiness than material purchases, such as clothing, jewelry, or electronic gadgets. Amit Kumar and Thomas Gilovich of Cornell University are investigating one potential explanation for this difference: that experiences prompt storytelling more than possessions do.

In new research, they asked participants to recall either a significant experiential purchase or a significant material purchase. They then asked them how much they had talked about the purchase they recalled, and questions related to the satisfaction they derived from their purchase. Participants rated a higher satisfaction for experiences than for possessions, which was because they were more likely to talk about the experiences with other people.

In another experiment, the researchers measured what happens when people cannot talk about their purchases. They asked participants if they would be willing to pay a price to be able to talk about a beach vacation (experiential purchase) or an electronic good (material purchase). "Participants were more likely to switch from a better purchase that they could not talk about to a lesser purchase that they could talk about in the experiential condition than in the material one," Kumar says.

"Well-being is likely to be enhanced by shifting the balance of spending in our consumer society away from material goods and towards experiential ones," Kumar says. "This research also suggests that there are benefits to be had not only by nudging people to choose experiences over possessions, but also by encouraging people to share stories about their experiences."

Knowing what is best to help others

The roots for how we give to others form at a very young age. Children, it turns out, are very sophisticated givers -- not only coming to someone's aid when needed but also coming up with the best strategy for doing so, often independent of an adult's instruction.

In new research, Kristina Olson of Yale University and Alia Martin have found that children often will act, thinking they know better than others what is best for them or others. In a series of experiments, the researchers investigate whether 3-year-old children will help someone by ignoring the specific request and instead offering a better alternative.

In one study, for example, when an experimenter asks the child for a specific marker, but the child knows that marker does not work, the child will instead offer up a better marker. In another study, a pre-recorded child asks the child participant to give her a piece of chocolate via a tube that supposedly connects them. If the participant knows that chocolate makes the other child sick, the participant will decide to give her fruit snacks instead.

"Perhaps most provocatively, children will selectively decide not to help in this way if they don't like the person," Olson says. "For example, if an experimenter has previously been mean, children won't warn the adult of a potential harm -- such as something sharp in the container they are reaching in -- but will if the experimenter was not mean."

"These results suggest that children are able to help adults and peers already by the preschool years in rather complex ways, even when the beneficiary is misguided about what he or she wants," Olson says. "Children don't just blindly do as they are requested, but rather consider a person's goal and consider alternative possible ways to achieve that goal."

Andrew Luck, Reggie Wayne, and Jim Irsay to appear on Parks and ...

The Colts will be showing off their acting and comedy skills this week.

The Indianapolis Colts' Andrew Luck and Reggie Wayne, as well as owner Jim Irsay, will be appearing on NBC's Parks and Recreation on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT. The trio will appear alongside Andy Dwyer (played by Chris Pratt) and Ron Swanson (played by Nick Offerman) as the cast makes a visit to Lucas Oil Stadium.

Many have wondered if Luck can fill the shoes of Peyton Manning at the quarterback position in Indy, but the real question is: Can he live up to Manning's many talents on the screen? From commercials to comedy, it is impossible to get away from Manning.

From the looks of the teaser below, Luck has a ways to go. If he were to host Saturday Night Live at this moment, it would be much closer to Michael Jordan's awkward early-90's episode than Manning's surprisingly adept and funny performance.

Now, how might Colts fans who are also fans of Parks and Recreation about this combination? Probably something like this:

Develop An Internet Promotion Strategy That Really ... - Maynas Eric

There is a chance that one?s business can skyrocket into a world of fame and fortune, but it is more likely for a business to remain small. Some will just fail all together. A majority of new businesses will fail, and that rate can be even higher for online businesses. Use the information in this article to find out how to prevent that by using smart Website marketing ideas.

Create a video featuring you using your product. This allows the customer to see you utilizing the product. Display the benefits of your product, as well as unadvertised features. After you make the video, post it to several sites including Youtube, blogs, and Facebook.

How your site looks and operates is as important as what you are selling. To avoid causing problems for your online customers, check all of your site?s links, ads, graphics, and checkout code regularly. Like shoppers can?t spend money in your establishment if they can?t find their way in, Internet users will not spend extra energy trying to navigate a faulty website.

TIP! Email marketing is an important, beneficial tool. Make sure they stay protected! Don?t use a service that will delete old emails because you may need access to them.

It is a good idea to cast yourself as an expert when it comes to the items you promote. This is important because not only will you gain credibility by providing a vast amount of correct and pertinent information, but it is extremely easy to lose credibility if people can see through your attempts to dishonestly claim to be an expert.

When approaching a successful Online marketing campaign take the time to research your competition. Learn about their products, what options they offer and their prices compared to yours for like products. This will give you an advantage when recommending your products to customers. This is the only way to succeed in the very competitive world of Website marketing.

TIP! Try to be as comprehensive and content-oriented as possible when creating your website. Give knowledge to your customers in a short time, so they are informed prior to purchasing a product.

Most people do not believe what is written within ads. That?s a result of many years of people being exposed to misleading advertising. Because of this, you have to show proof of what you claim on your website. Reviews, test reports, testimonials and pictures all serve this purpose. Do not make false statements. Treat your customers as intelligent and informed people. Do not take advantage of people. You will build a solid reputation, and you can win loyal customers who will give you repeat business for years to come.

Most product and service communications can benefit by the use of descriptive terms and phrases that will deliver gratification instantly or near-instant. Highlight how easy it is to submit an order, how quickly the order will be shipped, or the short amount of time it will take to notice results from using the product or service you are offering. Useful phrases are ?speedy downloads?, ?quick confirmations?, and ?secure checkout?.

TIP! One way to get people to click on your ads is to come up with a discrete image which includes a link to a page that includes a description of the item you wish to sell. Obama's Race To The Top Drives Nationwide Wave of School ...

?By Bruce A. Dixon | Black Agenda Report | January 9, 2013

A nationwide epidemic of school closings and teacher firings has been underway for some time. It?s concentrated chiefly in poor and minority communities, and the teachers let go are often experienced and committed classroom instructors, and likely to live in and near the communities they serve, and disproportionately black.

It?s not an accident, or a reflection of changing demographics, or more educational choices suddenly becoming available to families in those areas. It?s not due to greedy unionized teachers or the invisible hand of the marketplace or well-intentioned educational policies somehow gone awry.

The current wave of school closings is? the latest result of bipartisan educational policies which began with No Child Left Behind in 2001, and have kicked into overdrive under the Obama administration?s Race To The Top. In Chicago, the home town of the president and his Secretary of Education, the percentage of black teachers has dropped from 45% in 1995 to 19% today. After winning a couple skirmishes in federal court over discriminatory firings in a few schools, teachers have now filed a citywide class action lawsuit alleging that the city?s policy of school ?turnarounds? and ?transformations? is racially discriminatory because it?s carried out mainly in black neighborhoods and the fired teachers are disproportionately black.

How did this happen? Where did those policies come from, and exactly what are they?

Beginning in the 1980s, deep right pockets like the Bradley and Walton Family Foundations spent billions to create and fund fake ?grassroots movements.? They churned out academic studies and blizzards of media hype, first for vouchers, later on for charter schools and what?s become a whole panoply of privatization-oriented ?education reforms? ranging from teacher merit pay to common core curriculum and more.

Those billions paid off with the 2001 passage of the No Child Left Behind Act which made the right wing corporate agenda of undermining and ultimately privatizing public education national policy. ?Though standardized test scores were long known to prove little aside from student family income, they suddenly became the gold standard for judging teacher & school performance. ?School districts were required to purchase & give dozens of costly meaningless tests and to publish lists ranking their own schools and teachers as ?failing? when test scores were low, which again, was mostly wherever students were poor.

Amid torrents of ?blame the teachers? propaganda, so-called ?failing schools? were required to hire expensive contractors with cockeyed ?run the school like a business? remedies and more crackpot tests. Thus it was that NCLB spawned almost overnight an entire industry of jack leg educational consultants and test suppliers guaranteed a market with dollars diverted from already tight public school budgets. Those industries attracted capital investors, and began doing what every other industry does in the US ?- make big campaign contributions to politicians to get sweeter contracts and more favorable regulation. ?When test scores still didn?t rise, NCLB required many schools to close, making openings for chains of charter schools, often highly profitable charter schools, bringing the blessings of ?choice? and free market competition to the educational ?marketplace.?

It was an unequal sort of ?competition? though, because charter schools have always been allowed to pick and choose their students, to turn away those with special needs, and to hire teachers and principals with little or no relevant training.

Results in the classrooms of poor neighborhoods around the country were devastating. ?Where in 1987-88 the modal year for teacher experience ? that?s the number of years the largest cohort of teachers had been in the classrooms ? ?was ten years, by 2008 the biggest block of teachers were in their very first year, by definition ? the least confident, the least experienced and the least effective.

This was the state of public education when President Obama walked into the White House door. ?What did he do? Did he turn it around? Or did he double down? The answer is that in the spirit of corporate bipartisanship, president Obama sided with the charter school sugar daddies instead of black teachers, black parents and their children.

President Obama appointed Chicago Schools CEO Arne Duncan Secretary of Education. A champion of privatization, Duncan had closed dozens of Chicago schools, many on short notice, some at the apparent behest of gentrifying real estate developers. ?Duncan fired so many veteran black Chicago teachers to , fill their slots with mostly white rookies, that teachers sued him for racial discrimination in federal court and won. ?Duncan even introduced military charter schools in Chicago, in one case handing a west side middle school to the US Marine Corps.

No Child Left Behind had been passed by a Democratic congress in the first days of the Bush administration. Opposition to its policies was widespread, and much of that opposition was among Democratic constituencies. So President Obama?s signature education policy initiative, would bypass Congress and the opportunity for public debate on the disastrous effects of existing pro-privatization policies.

Secretary Duncan at his side, President Obama introduced Race To The Top, drawn up by the Bill & Melinda Gates, the Eli Broad, Boeing, the Walton Family and other foundations. ?Under Race To The Top states and school districts are forced to bid against each other for many of the same education dollars they used to receive as a matter of course. The winning districts are those who apply Race To The Top?s four official solutions to their so-called ?failing schools.?

Race To The Top?s four federally mandated ?solutions?, which are never spelled out by corporate media news outlets, are ?school transformations,? ?school turnarounds,? ?school restarts,? ?and ?school closures.?

Race to the Top defines a ?school transformation,? its first remedy, as firing the principal and up to 50% of teachers, replacing them with temps and newbies, hiring expensive consultants, often the same folks who drafted Race To The Top guidelines or their cronies, to redesign curriculum and personnel policies. ?Transformed? schools tie teachers jobs to test scores (that?s what caused the national epidemic of cheating scandals) lengthening school days with no extra pay, cutting wages & benefits and of course lots more costly and useless tests.

Race To The Top calls its second remedy ?school turnaround.? Turnarounds are exactly the same as school transformations, with high priced ?run the school like a business? consultants, increased reliance on standardized tests, sanctions for teachers and all new hires sourced from Teach For America type agencies, except that transformations fire up to 50% of school staff, but to be called a turnaround schools must fire at least 50% of school staff.

?School restarts,? are the third Race To The Top solution. In a ?restart? you close the public school and reopen a new school with new staff and the same connected consultants used for transformations and turnarounds, but all under the management of a private corporation. In other words, you close the public school and open a charter school in the same building. Charters of course can use public money to hire even less qualified teachers, pick and choose the students it serves, and often to generate handsome private profits.

Race To The Top?s fourth remedy is ?school closure.? You fire the staff, padlock the school doors and let families take their chances on the free market, or find another public school if they can.

The states and school districts quickest to carry out the most transformations, turnarounds, restarts and school closings are the ones who get to keep or increase their levels of federal funding. Those who drag their feet lose federal education dollars. That?s why it?s a race, but not exactly to the top.

Clearly there?s no broad support for these insanely destructive educational policies. But since news media never report what Race To The Top?s actual requirements are, or even that a nationwide wave of school closings and teacher firings is underway, much of the public, and even many teachers and their unions are unable to make the connection between federal policies and their local school crises. Corporate media point helpfully instead to corrupt local officials, greedy organized teachers insufficient reliance on the invisible hand of the free market. News reports in many areas are full of stories about school districts whose certification is imperiled because of looming loss of federal funds, but the public is offered few clues as to exactly WHY the funds are lacking or WHAT measures the district will have to take to get them restored. The fact is, Race To The Top is consciously designed to punish school districts that try to protect their educational assets, and rewards those who eviscerate and sell them off.

President Obama?s Race To The Top then, is the direct cause of our national wave of school closings and mass teacher firings from Philly to Atlanta and Los Angeles to Rhode Island. It was local implementation of Obama?s Race To The Top mandates that forced Chicago teachers out on strike last fall, and it?s reluctance to carry out these measures that now imperils education funding in cities as large as Las Vegas.

The Chicago teachers class action lawsuit is a good thing. But the courts have been captive to the far right wing for a long time now, and are not likely to issue quick and sweeping rulings that upset things as they are. In the end, the only thing that will begin to save public education, that will halt the wave of school closings and teacher firings is mass mobilization on a scale not seen in fifty years. Right now, that seems almost as unlikely as corporate school reform being reversed or halted by the federal court.

What passes for black leadership these days, the descendants of the old line ?civil rights? organizations are firmly on the corporate education reform bandwagon. Bill Gates, for example, delivered the 2011 keynote at the National Urban League?s annual meeting. The NAACP and similar outfits are no better, all preferring to do the bidding of their funders and their president, over the interests of ordinary black families and their children. Even teachers unions are handicapped. Unlike the Chicago Teachers Union most haven?t spent the last few years forging deep ties with organized forces in their school communities, and lack even a tradition of standing up for their own members they way labor unions ought to.

In human history, the notion that everybody is entitled to a quality public education is still relatively new, and has powerful enemies. President Obama is one of these. It was the insistence of newly freed slaves that led to the first universal public education laws in the South. African American leaders till now have always been stalwart champions of public education. Until we raise up a new crop of leaders and movements not beholden to corporate funding, not disposed to uncritical worship of corporate power wielded by a black face, public education will continue to wither and die.
