SANTA ANA ? A neighbor's complaint about possible cat hoarding led police to a Santa Ana home where two women and eight children were living in unsafe conditions with 23 cats, a dog and a parrot, authorities said Tuesday.
About 9 a.m., the neighbor called animal control complaining about a strong odor and possible cat hoarding at a two-bedroom home in the 1500 block of West Sixth Street, police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
"The ammonia smell was so bad they backed off and called the Fire Department," Bertagna said.
Animal-control officers had to put on hazmat suits before entering the home. They found the cats and a parrot in a small bedroom full of feces and urine. A dog was also in the home, where eight children ages 2 to 17 live, Bertagna said.
"The welfare of the minors is our main concern," Bertagna said.
Child Protective Services will investigate whether the parents neglected their children. The animals were taken to the OC Animal Care Center.
