Oct 30

Slide2

Inspired by a Turkish recipe ? zucchini, onion and feta fritters ? which are usually fried, I opted for a bake instead.? I made this into a pie without the crust.? It?s very easy to make, and very tasty too. You can make this a day ahead of serving if you wish.? Kids love it.? Serve with a mixed salad of your choice, or better still try my Middle Eastern Style salad with it.

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

1 x 350 g (12.35 oz) pack firm tofu (drained of its water)

3 heaped Tbsp cornstarch

1 medium sized leek, thinly sliced, and pre-steamed

2 zucchini (courgettes), thinly sliced

salt to taste

1 cup (250 mL) vegan milk

1 cup vegan cheese of your choice, plus extra for the topping

2 Tbsp nutritional yeast

? cup parsley, finely chopped

METHOD

  1. Use your food processor slicer blade to slice the zucchini and leek ? once chopped, set aside.
  2. Next, process all the ingredients, except for the parsley and vegan cheese, in your food processor for half a minute until smooth.? Then add the parsley and cheese (minus the extra reserved for topping), and process for a further 10 seconds.
  3. Place half the chopped veggies in a greased oven-proof dish, then pour over half the tofu cheese mix, add the remaining veggies, and pour the rest of the mix over the veggies. Finally, spread the extra cheese on top
  4. Place in a hot 400?F (200?C) oven until golden on top ? around 40 minutes. To check if it?s ready, place a knife in it, and if it comes out almost clean, you?re there.
  5. Allow to cool down for 20 minutes before serving.? Enjoy !

Study shows voting higher among youth using social media to express beliefs

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Young adults who are interested in politics are more likely than others to participate in public affairs by speaking out about their political beliefs using Facebook, online blogs and other social media, according to a study performed by researchers from the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University.

Co-authored by Bruce Pinkleton, a communications professor at WSU, and Yushu Zhou, a former WSU graduate student who is now a doctoral candidate at Stanford University, the study is scheduled for publication in the November issue of the journal, Mass Communication and Society. It is based on an analysis of the political involvement and online interactions of more than 400 undergraduate college students.

Pinkleton and Zhou found that participants who were interested in election information were more likely to use social media, public affairs websites and other digital information sources to learn about the elections and were more likely to participate in public affairs by expressing their opinions online. Prior research has shown that the more informed a citizen is, the more likely they are to participate in elections. They also found that participants using traditional news sources, government sources, and candidate websites had higher levels of political efficacy, or the belief that their participation matters.

"In 2012, candidates have more channels to keep in touch with voters, such as Facebook, Twitter, and even Linkedin where presidential candidates have created their own profiles," said Zhou. "These new communication channels not only provide richer political information and interactive messages for voters, especially young voters, but also reshape the relationships between candidates and voters."

Current presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney offer political websites and social networking sites in order to promote their campaigns. Both candidates use not only social media, such as Facebook, but have also developed Tumblr, Spotify, and Flickr accounts. These are all websites that enable political engagement, and are typically used by young adults. The findings of the study are expected to become particularly significant as candidates continue to branch out into other new forms of media.

"When young people are motivated, even blogs and social media can be important sources of information and contribute to their political participation," said Pinkleton. "Given the historically low levels of political participation among young people, this is an important finding. The more we can get people involved in the political process, the more likely we are to enjoy the benefits of a strong, healthy democracy."

The article is entitled "Modeling the Effects of Political Information Source Use and Online Expression on Young Adults' Political Efficacy."

Prescription software developer raises $4.25M for physical

A healthcare IT startup is developing physical rehabilitation software that could be prescribed by doctors or physical therapists.

Reflexion Health has raised $4.25 million from the West Health Investment Fund for its Rehabilitation Tracker program, according to a company statement. It is an affiliate of the West Health Institute founded by telemarketing billionaires Gary and Mary West.

The program uses Microsoft Kinect motion software licensed from the West Health Institute. The Rehabilitation Tracker provides exercises, instructional videos and patient education material that can be set to the needs of each patient. The software allows a physician and physical therapist to track the performance and adherence of their patient.

The concept of prescribing software programs isn?t a new one. New York-based Happtique has been recruiting for a prescription apps pilot program that includes physical therapy as well as areas such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and personal training.

It?s the second of two companies in the La Jolla, California-based West Health Incubator, also affiliated with the West Health Institute. The first was Sense4Baby, a company developing wireless, remote fetal monitoring systems to help obstetricians monitor the health of a mother and baby remotely when a physician isn?t available.

In an interview with Xconomy, Reflexion CEO and co-founder Spencer Hutchins said it will use the funding to advance development of its interactive software. Hutchins said the company wants to explore a marketing approach that would entail enrolling physicians and physical therapists as resellers who would prescribe the program.

Patient adherence is a hot area for providers who are under pressure to reduce readmissions that stem from issues like not following physician instructions or taking medication.

The Orange County Jewish Arts Festival begins with the thought provoking film Brothers a drama directed by Igaal Niddam dealing with Israels religious-secular divide .The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Rabbi Elie Spitz, Professor Scott Spitzer and Professor Steven Russo-Schindler discussing the issues dramatized.

In recent years, the Jerusalem has seen an increasing number of demonstrations from extremist elements of the Haredi (ultra-orthodox) community, protesting perceived violations of their strict interpretation of Jewish law. This is the backdrop for the film Brothers (produced by Troubadour Films, Geneva in Hebrew, with English subtitles). The film focuses on the troubled relationship between two brothers who have not seen nor spoken to each other for 25 years: the distinguished lawyer and Torah scholar Aaron, who has traveled to Jerusalem from the United States in order to defend a group of Yeshiva students who have refused military service in the IDF and his brother, Dan, an idealistic kibbutznik. A brilliant defense lawyer, Aaron finds his equal in his adversary Shelly, a driven, fiercely secular public prosecutor. Five Things Leaders Can Learn from Mayor Bloomberg About Crisis ...

While the impact of Hurricane Sandy in the U.S. spread far and wide, the New York/New Jersey area definitely took the worst hit. The scenes of flooding, fires and dangling construction cranes on Monday night and Tuesday morning were truly stunning.

In the run-up to the storm, a friend of mine wrote that we were likely to see lots of examples of leadership this week. She was certainly right. Some dramatic examples that come to mind are the U.S. Coast Guard?s helicopter borne rescue of the HMS Bounty crew off North Carolina (see the video here) and New York City firefighters rescuing residents from a waterlogged inferno in Rockaway, Queens.

A less dramatic but equally visible example of leadership this week has come from New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg. With multiple press conferences a day before, during and after the storm, Bloomberg has kept his citizens informed and, in the process, given a seminar on how to do leadership communications in a crisis. If you haven?t seen one of the mayor?s press conferences, it?s worth a look to see how he does it. I?ve watched excerpts from a few of them today and read through some of the transcripts.

Here are five lessons I?ve learned about crisis communications from Mayor Mike:

Project Quiet Confidence: As I?ve written here before (long before Hurricane Sandy), leaders create the weather; not literally obviously, but leaders influence the response of others by how they show up. In all of his briefings, Bloomberg showed up prepared, appropriately concerned and quietly confident that his extended team and his citizens would respond to the storm in the most effective way possible. His quiet confidence likely gave confidence to others in a challenging situation.

Be Consistent and Frequent: I don?t know the exact schedule that Bloomberg has had for his pressers but it looks like he was up for 20 to 30 minutes in the morning and afternoon each day before, during and after Sandy. Establishing an operating rhythm for his communications enabled him to get his team?s messages out consistently. Keeping people informed helps keep them calm.

Be Relevant: Bloomberg and his staff have done a masterful job of talking about the things that matter most to people. He?s kept his remarks relevant by providing information on preparation plans, evacuations, when the power will be back on, transportation updates and even the plans for Halloween post-Sandy.

Make Specific Requests: In a crisis, most people want to know what they can do to help or at least stay safe. (Then there are those who ignore all the requests at the peril of themselves and others.) Bloomberg has been very clear in asking people to do things that help themselves and the community ? evacuate low lying areas, stay out of public parks until damaged trees are cleared, only use 911 for life threatening emergencies. Most people will honor specific, common sense requests. Leaders communicating in a crisis need to make them.

Put the Team Front and Center: In every press conference I saw, Bloomberg had the leaders of the relevant city agencies lined up behind him. They were there to answer questions but also to demonstrate that there was a unified effort to address the challenges at hand. Bloomberg went out of his way to recognize specific leaders and their agencies for the work they were doing. In a crisis, people want to know that qualified people have their backs. Bloomberg made sure that New Yorkers knew that.

What other examples of leadership have inspired you during the Hurricane Sandy crisis?

Video: Christie: New Jersey destruction ?unthinkable?

>>> as we mentioned, chris christie the governor new jersey today took an aerial tour of the coastline. he landed at several stops, among them, belmar, the beach front community where a lot of folks approached him. many of them, remember, have just lost everything in this storm. and we have the governor live with us tonight. governor, i heard you say you're operating on two hours of sleep from last night, so we'll try to make this quick and painless. first of all, let's establish that what happened here, you can meet people from kansas to seattle who all share childhood memories of the jersey shore . it's kind of a universal truth, we're dealing with the places of childhood memories for you and me and a lot of eother places. board walks where we still take our families on summer weekends. describe what you were able to see of what's left from the air today?

>> brian , it's unthinkable. let's say this, i flew over the seaside heights board walk today. the roller coaster, the log flume ride are in the ocean. the board walk in front of lucky leo's, brian , is gone. it is literally gone. the big sausage and pepper stand in the middle is gone, it's gone. all those kind of iconic places that you and i knew as kids are gone. and you see that up and down the jersey shore . seaside heights , long beach island they're underwater, it's just unthinkable. bellmawr , the entire board wall of bellmawr is gone, it's two or three blocks up the side streets away from the beach. all you see is water, sand and debris where our board walks used to be.

>> it's unbelievable. you just named all those landmarks i know so well from july and august weekends. here's the question, are the rules of the game changing? the shore line that used to be enough -- and not just jersey , connecticut, massachusetts, rhode island , new york. is that not enough any more? are you on the precipice here of a massive shore line reconstruction? this is your summer economy, part of the beating heart of new jersey .

>> reporter: yeah, listen, we're going to have to do an entire reexamination, brian . the other thing you notice, from bellmawr , really asbury park on down to the end of long beach island, the beach is gone. it's gone. and we're going to have to reexamine how we deal with all of this now as we go through a period of rebuilding. i'm committed to rebuilding, we're going to do it. it's not only the heart of our economy, it's the soul of new jersey . the jersey shore is the soul of new jersey and we're going to rebuild, but it's going to take some time and effort and some resilience. but those are all things that new jersey ans have an abundance.

>> the jersey shore you and i knew long before it was a tv show , you think there is a way to forety phi it while preserving it, while keeping its essence as a kind of summer playground even though nature often proves that when nature bats last, nature wins?

>> yeah, i think there is a way to do it, brian , but we're going to have to sit down and be smart about it. i saw in places like avalon, where there were significant dunes that were built by the army corps of engineers , they did much, much better than some of the things that were done in the northern part of the shore. one of the things i'm going to be talking about to the president tomorrow is bringing the army corps in immediately, what is it the best way to rebuild the jersey shore .

>> people who have no interest in seeing the jersey shore make it, is it fair to ask why you, why the money? why the effort if this is the new normal?

>> well, listen, it's fair to ask it, but i have the answer. the answer is that for new jersey , which gives so much to this country -- by the way, 50th in return of our federal tax dollars, so new jerseyians send more than any other state in america in federal taxes, getting back less. when that's done and you see that our state is a state that needs this to con contribute unite to our economy, and also to the soul and the vibrancy of our state, i think we have very good answers and arguments. you're looking at the guy who's going to make those arguments.

>> governor, thank you very much after a long day, another long night. governor chris christie we may see you from the command center again team.

91% Holy Motors

"Holy Motors," from French filmmaker Leos Carax, is the best avant-garde film of 2012 so far. But that's not saying much, as it's been a terrible year for avant-garde film. Despite its title, "Holy Motors" really isn't about cars. It's somewhat about technology, with limousines probably meant to represent traditional celluloid cameras -- so big and bulky that they are a challenge to handle. But oh so wonderful. Big wonderful machines. Stretch limos can barely turn a corner in the old sectors of great cities like Paris and New York. But doesn't everyone's heart skip a beat just a bit when they enter one? First and foremost, "Holy Motors" is about people, as was the case with Carax's first film, "Boy Meets Girl" (1984). This is an avant-garde artist with a deep-feeling heart and a deep sensitivity to the people around him. Holy Love. Amen to that. The film documents a day in the life of a man named Oscar. (Perhaps this is a tribute to American cinema and its big, grand Academy Awards. Holy Glamour.) Played spectacularly well by the protean Denis Lavant, Oscar is carted around all day in a white stretch limo, taken to a series of appointments throughout Paris. At each appointment, he becomes a different character. His limo is a dressing room, where he applies make-up and elaborate disguises to become his next character. The first one is an old, crippled woman begging for money on the street. Another is a revolting barefoot troll (half-man, half-beast) who interrupts a high-fashion photo shoot and kidnaps the model (who is played by Eva Mendes). Every sequence is quite thrilling, and each one is so different from the others. Most breathtaking of all is the sequence where his movements are recorded in a stop-motion studio, for use in what appears to be a pornographic video game. Gradually it becomes clear that these appointments are elaborately planned, and everyone he interacts with during each scene is also an actor. While donning his next costume in the limo, he is also reading a file that someone else has prepared, a summary of what his next character will be doing. We even meet a man who appears to be something like Oscar's employer, who critiques Oscar's performances. Oscar announces that he has been having more difficulty staying in character because the cameras have gotten so small that they cannot be seen. This is when "Holy Motors" started to seem like a comment on digital filmmaking. At my screening at the New York Film Festival, Carax was in attendance, as was Kylie Minogue, who has a small role in the film. (I initially thought this was Minogue's first time acting. But not so. She has appeared in a number of television shows and films, including "Moulin Rouge," where she played the Green Fairy. Who knew?) Carax spoke for about a half-hour after the screening, and it became even more clear that "Holy Motors" was primarily meant as an allegory about 21st-century filmmaking and the demise of traditional cameras. At one point, he said the new cameras today are not really cameras. "They're more like computers," he said. He feels sad about the rise of digital filmmaking, claiming that it "looks terrible." But "Holy Motors," which was shot 100% on digital, looked gorgeous. Gradually during his remarks, the object of his ire shifted. What really angers him is that he's been unable to make a film since 1999. He had several projects collapse at the last minute because producers won't back him. This has nothing to do with the 21st century or changing technology. This is the age-old problem of cinema being enormously expensive. If anything, it's gotten easier in the digital age because the new technology costs so much less. It's no surprise to me that Carax finally was able to get a project green-lighted now that digital has triumphed. To me, Carax has digital to thank. Furthermore, I suspect that "Holy Motors" is going to succeed well enough financially that he's going to get another project green-lighted in 2013. Holy Digital. While I appreciate Carax's work and consider myself a fan, I wouldn't put him in my pantheon. There's something still just a bit underwhelming about his work.

Apple executive shakeup: Scott Forstall and John Browett are leaving the company

Apple executive shakeup Scott Forstall and John Browett are leaving the company

Huge news out of Apple today, as the company's senior vice president of iOS software, Scott Forstall, will leave the company next year. Furthermore, John Browett -- head of Apple retail -- is also on his way out. The memo was delivered late today, on a day that is littered with other news that the company may hope will bury the bulk of it. It's practically a given that Forstall is taking the brunt of the impact from its decision to forge ahead with an obviously subpar Maps application, all while trumpeting it as one of the pillars of iOS 6.

As the shakeup unfolds, Jony Ive, Bob Mansfield, Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi will add more responsibilities to their roles. In other words, Tim Cook isn't about to usher in new help who may thwart the company's efforts to continue at its breakneck pace. Curiously, Mansfield will be heaping more on his own plate just months after he had originally planned to retire. As for Ive? He'll be responsible for providing "leadership and direction for Human Interface (HI) across the company in addition to his role as the leader of Industrial Design." Eddy Cue will be gifted burdened with Siri and Maps, while also keeping an eye on the iTunes Store, the App Store, the iBookstore and iCloud. Needless to say, he probably won't be seeing too many walls outside of Cupertino for the foreseeable future. Federighi is being tasked to lead both iOS and OS X, while Mansfield chairs a new Technologies group that bundles Apple's wireless teams across the company.

Just months after Browett was brought in from Dixons in order to lead up Apple's retail efforts, he's on the outs as well. Of course, he's also responsible for the branch having to tell stores that it "messed up" when he fiddled with staffing levels back in August. A search for a new head of Retail is underway and in the interim, the Retail team will report directly to Tim Cook.

How To Start Your Own Business | Business Networking Link

Do you have a great business idea up your sleeve?

Now might be the ideal time to take a leap and consider putting it into action.

While the economic crisis continues and increasing numbers of staff face redundancy, more and more people are considering striking out on their own.

Learning how to run a business during tough time requires creative thinking. Office space and advertising are often cheaper during such times, however and many of today?s giants, including Apple began during recessions.

Setting up in business is never easy, but a few careful considerations can make a huge difference to your success.

To begin with, you need to draw up a realistic business plan, setting out your objectives, strategies and financial forecasts.

Not only will such a business plan help you to clarify your goals, it will also assist your bank manager when considering lending to you, setting out a clear structure.

There are, of course, other ways of obtaining funding too. Organisations such as The Prince?s Trust and government-backed schemes including the Enterprise Finance Guarantee scheme offer grants and loans to people wishing to start up in business.

Ensuring you meet all the legal requirements for your new business is also critical for your long-term survival. Finding out all you can on the subject of tax, employment and health and safety issues, via the assistance of your bank manager, accountant and HM Revenue and Customs will prove to be a wise investment of your time.

When it comes to business finance and marketing information, your local Chamber of Commerce is an excellent port of call. Often hosting business workshops, their advice to new business can be invaluable.

Remember too that as your business grows, you will need ways to adapt your existing systems. Accounting packages that can be upgraded are extremely useful, while keeping proper paper records of invoices and statements is essential.

Research your market thoroughly. The more you can find out about your customers the more idea you will have of how to reach them and interest them in engaging with your products and services. From delivering leaflets or newspaper advertising all the way through to online use of Google Ad Words, choosing the most appropriate and effective method of advertising for your business is essential.

Choosing to work from home is fine but don?t readily dismiss the advantages that come with having an office space. Having a place where you go to work focuses you and enables you to create a greater work/life balance.

In the end, it is the ability to believe in yourself that will see you through. Confidence does indeed breed success, as does the ability to be enterprising, to have ideas and make them happen.

(AP) ? Apple Inc. shook up its executive ranks Monday, saying the head of its store operations is leaving after just six months on the job and the long-serving head of its iPhone software development operations is exiting next year.

Apple didn't say why retail senior vice president John Browett and iOS software SVP Scott Forstall were leaving, but both have presided over missteps this year.

Browett cut staffing hours at Apple's retail stores, a move the company reversed and acknowledged as a mistake. Forstall's division launched a software update in September that replaced Google Maps with Apple's first mapping application. It quickly drew unfavorable comparisons to the software it was replacing, and Apple apologized.

Browett's departure is immediate, and the company is looking for a replacement. Forstall will act as an advisor to CEO Tim Cook until he leaves, Apple said. His responsibilities will be divided among other Apple veterans.

Forstall joined Apple in 1997 with the company's purchase of Steve Jobs' NeXT startup. Apple credits him as one of the original architects of Mac OS X.

Craig Federighi, who is now in charge of the Mac OS, will add iOS development to his responsibilities, Apple said, but Jony Ive, the chief designer behind the distinctive look of Apple hardware, will take responsibility for the look and feel of Apple's software.

Eddy Cue, head of Apple's online services and iTunes, will assume responsibility for Maps and Siri, the "virtual assistant" application on the iPhone and iPad.

Browett took over the store operations after Ron Johnson, who helped create the Apple stores, left to become CEO at J.C. Penney Co. in November.

Apple has more than 360 stores, and they're unique in several ways. They sell more per square foot than any other chain in the U.S., yet they account for just 12 percent of Apple's overall sales. They're ambassadors of Apple's brand, and provide customers with an easy way to access in-person technical support.

At the time Browett was appointed, commentators wondered what an executive from a traditional retail operation would bring to Apple. Browett's move to cut staffing appeared to be motivated by a desire to improve profits, but Apple divisions don't have their own profit-and-loss accounts; they're supposed to support the company as a whole.

Al-Qaida claims deadly holiday attacks in Iraq

(AP) ? An al-Qaida affiliated group in Iraq has claimed responsibility for wave of attacks that killed dozens of people in the past two days during a major Muslim holiday.

In a statement posted Monday on a militant website, the Islamic State of Iraq, al-Qaida's Iraqi branch, said the attacks were in response to what the group alleged were the arrests of Sunni women to pressure their wanted relatives to turn themselves to Iraqi security forces.

The al-Qaida statement warned the Shite-led government and its "apostate beasts" to stop persecuting Sunni tribes and women, otherwise "they will not dream of security in the day or night and in Eid (holiday) or not."

The Eid al-Adha attacks killed about 50 people despite the government's efforts to secure the four-day holiday.

New app helps UK strip-club dancers know rights

LONDON (Reuters) - A new iPhone app offers workplace tips for exotic dancers to help them protect themselves against financial exploitation, abuse and a lack of safety.

The "Dancers Information" application and a related website were conceived by researchers after findings from a study of the erotic-dance industry in England and Wales showed that current regulations of nightclubs in the sexual entertainment sector do not automatically address issues of employment status, welfare and security.

Researchers at the University of Leeds surveyed more than 300 women dancers about their working conditions in two separate sets of interviews beginning in 2010-2011, after a new law regulating the sex entertainment industry was introduced in England and Wales in 2009. It was not clear how the law would be implemented, and how it would affect up to 10,000 dancers who researchers said perform in clubs on peak weekend nights.

Most dancers were concerned that their welfare and working conditions were not being taken seriously by the new legislation and that the community's views were favored against dancers, the survey showed.

Most respondents had chosen the dancing because they found it a flexible, relatively high-earning, "cash-in-hand" form of work, the report showed.

Most dancers didn't report violence and felt safe in their workplace because of security staff, but verbal harassment and unwanted touching from customers was an issue, the report said. Some women reported being stalked.

The app provides tips on how dancers throughout can best work with their employers to manage customers, personal safety information, tax awareness and self-employment information.

All this is information that could take dancers a couple of months to discover on their own, researcher Rosie Campbell said, adding dancers were being left unprotected financially over the long term because most weren't paying toward the state pension.

"We have limited time, limited resources, so we thought, 'How can we get better reach to dancers?'" Campbell told TrustLaw, a news website run by the Thomson Reuters Foundation covering women's rights and good governance, at the launch of the app at London's City Health 2012 conference last week.

"We formed an online network of dancers based in different parts of the UK who were extremely helpful as the website and app were developed," she said.

One survey, which involved almost 200 dancers, showed they paid up to 200 pounds ($322) in fees and up to 80 percent commission to work in clubs, while also facing arbitrary fines from clubs of up to 50 pounds for chewing gum, using mobile phones, being late, absence or for being drunk.

According to the research, 96 percent of the dancers did not pay into a pension and 90 percent had never had a contract. More than 80 percent had never received a wage slip, while none had ever received holiday pay or sick pay.

Almost 60 percent said that a disadvantage of the work was not knowing how much money they would earn.

Although the age range of those surveyed was between 18 and 53, most of the dancers were between 22 and 29.

"We have argued for some form of regulation that takes on board working conditions and rights," Campbell said, adding that trade unions are interested in contributing to a planned upgrade to the Dancers Information app.

Not only was the app developed in consultation with the dancers, but HM Revenue and Customs provided tax information for the app and the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, which promotes personal safety, offered tips on staying safe.

"There's not a high degree of funky interactivity and functionality that are on some apps," Campbell said. "That's something we'd like to look at for the future should we get more funding - we had limited resources."

AMD getting into the ARM processor game

AMD LogoARM-based processors seem to be the future of computing, especially in applications that require power (and heat) efficiency, like tablets and smartphones. Trying to skate to where the puck is going, AMD is starting to research creating ARM processors. Their hope is to supplement their current lineup of desktop, laptop and server processors -- based on an x86 architecture -- with these higher efficiency options.

AMD is quick to point out that their foray into ARM processors is focused on reducing costs and improving efficiency of data centers. That being said, it's hard to believe that it would pump this R&D into making ARM processors without contemplating offering a cheap processor option for phone and tablet manufacturers. It says that the first AMD ARM processors will be coming by 2014.

Rovio releases first Angry Birds Star Wars gameplay trailer

Android Central

Angry Birds Star Wars is inching ever-closer to its November 8 launch, and today they've shown a little bit more than their usual cutesy teasers. The first glimpses of Angry Birds Star Wars gameplay shows a cool secondary effect whereby the red bird Luke Skywalker can mow down structures by whirling a lightsaber about while along its collision course. Meanwhile the pink bird Princess Leia can call down laser fire as she makes her descent. AT-AT walkers on Hoth and Tusken raiders on Tatooine also make a short appearance.

As played-out out as both Star Wars and Angry Birds merchandising may be, they're both highly-valuable brands, and it's not a huge surprise to see their creators milking either one for all they're worth.

So, any Angry Birds players digging the new look? What about you, Star Wars fans? Does a Millenium Falcon with a slingshot on top compel you to check out the next Angry Birds?

Thinkpad Helix appears on Lenovo's Israeli website, lends hope to a stateside or Euro arrival

It wasn't long ago that our Chinese language website reported on the Lenovo Thinkpad Helix, a convertible ultrabook that launched alongside other models, but seemed destined for China only. Now, it looks like Israeli folks might also get the device, as it popped up recently on the company's website there. We noted that it would carry Windows 8, an 11.6-inch, 1920 x 1080 detachable IPS touchscreen, NFC 3G module, stylus, 10-hour battery life and optional Core i7 processor for the top model. That would make it a pretty potent ultrabook, let alone a tablet -- making us hope that it'll power its way over to our shores.

Test developed to detect early-stage diseases with naked eye

Monday, October 29, 2012

Scientists have developed a prototype ultra-sensitive sensor that would enable doctors to detect the early stages of diseases and viruses with the naked eye, according to research published today in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

The team, from Imperial College London, report that their visual sensor technology is ten times more sensitive than the current gold standard methods for measuring biomarkers. These indicate the onset of diseases such as prostate cancer and infection by viruses including HIV.

The researchers say their sensor would benefit countries where sophisticated detection equipment is scarce, enabling cheaper and simpler detection and treatments for patients.

In the study, the team tested the effectiveness of the sensor by detecting a biomarker called p24 in blood samples, which indicates HIV infection.

Professor Molly Stevens, from the Departments of Materials and Bioengineering at Imperial College London, says:

"It is vital that patients get periodically tested in order to assess the success of retroviral therapies and check for new cases of infection. Unfortunately, the existing gold standard detection methods can be too expensive to be implemented in parts of the world where resources are scarce. Our approach affords for improved sensitivity, does not require sophisticated instrumentation and it is ten times cheaper, which could allow more tests to be performed for better screening of many diseases."

The researchers in today's study also tested samples for the biomarker called Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is an early indicator for Prostate Cancer. The team say the sensor can also be reconfigured for other viruses and diseases where the specific biomarker is known.

The sensor works by analysing serum, derived from blood, in a disposable container. If the result is positive for p24 or PSA, there is a reaction that generates irregular clumps of nanoparticles, which give off a distinctive blue hue in a solution inside the container. If the results are negative the nanoparticles separate into ball-like shapes, creating a reddish hue. Both reactions can be easily seen by the naked eye.

The team also report that the sensor was so sensitive that it was able to detect minute levels of p24 in samples where patients had low viral loads, which could not be diagnosed using existing tests such as the Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) test and the gold standard nucleic acid based test.

Dr Roberto de la Rica, co-author of the study from the Department of Materials at Imperial College London, adds:

"We have developed a test that we hope will enable previously undetectable HIV infections and indicators of cancer to be picked up, which would mean people could be treated sooner. We also believe that this test could be significantly cheaper to administer, which could pave the way for more widespread use of HIV testing in poorer parts of the world."

The next stage of the research will see the team approaching not-for-profit global health organisations, which could provide strategic direction and funding for manufacturing and distributing the sensor to low income countries.
