Spectera?s benefits include:
Comprehensive Eye Exams-the eye doctors that partner with Spectera provide complete and thorough vision exams which include both the diagnosis and a treatment plan if required. Frames-Most frames on the market today are covered, in full, except for applicable co-pays. Contact Lenses-Spectera?s contact lens benefits are unparalleled in the market. The exam, the fitting, the contacts (even disposables) and up to two follow-up visits are covered in full, after the applicable co-pay. Laser Eye Surgery-partnering with the Laser Vision Network of America, Spectera members have access to substantially discounted laser eye surgery. Members have access to more than 400 NCQA, National Committee for Quality Assurance, credentialed laser vision locations and receive a 15% discount off the standard or usual and customary price, or 5% off of any promotional price that may be offered at the time.
Spectera is proud of its unmatched network availability. Not only do their clients include both private and retail chain providers, but they own their own chain of United Optical stores. This means that most members of Spectera will have no problem finding a conveniently-located provider. From their site you can even look for a provider before ever signing up, which ensures that you will have the access you need. You can search on either your zip code and within up to a 50 mile radius or you can search by city and state. You can also search by doctor or practice name and get complete driving directions. How could it get any easier?
Spectera also has the means to oversee their quality control and cost containment. Spectera?s optical laboratory, Crown Optical, maintains stringent quality standards, even more than the ANSI, the American National Standards Institute. Leading edge technology and software has resulted in the highest quality and efficiency in the fabrication of eyeglasses in the industry. And in order to deliver on their cost-containment pledge, Spectera?s providers deliver services at 20 to 40 percent below the usual and customary charges for eye exams, lenses and frames. Spectera even has a double-claims system in place, allowing for easy processing of both electronic and paper claims.
Spectera also offers in and out-of-network benefits and has a handy toll-free number and an email support system to determine coverage and to help in the claims process.
So, when making a decision on vision insurance, or if you are a company looking for vision coverage for your employees, make sure to include Spectera in your cost and benefit comparison.

Field season is getting busy. On Monday we started a new series on the Expeditions blog. And today we are starting another one.
Charles Sheppard is leading an expedition to the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean (about midway between Mauritius and Sri Lanka ? see the map) and he (and in some cases his collaborators and students) will be posting daily dispatches from the trip.
Professor Charles Sheppard with the University of Warwick in the UK has led several scientific research expeditions to the Chagos Archipelago. Following early visits in the 1970s, expeditions he has organised since 1996 have involved over 100 scientists from numerous institutions, chosen to produce an integrated understanding of this archipelago. His speciality is the condition of coral reefs, especially those around the world that have suffered from human impacts. This specialization quickly led to recognition of the contrasting, remarkable, and unique condition of the huge area of reefs in Chagos: Chagos has escaped most of the impacts that have affected most of the world.
The series started today. Check out the first post ? Conserving Chagos: Science Expedition to World?s Largest ?Ocean Park? ? and keep coming back for more every day.

A cast of puppet dreamers emerge from within a veil and twist, turn and blow their way through ancient wisdoms on mothering, war, migration, birth and death in Tori Ralston and the Theater of Performing Objects? Harvesting Pomegranate Dreams.
The Process Series? residency and public workshops will be a space to explore and share techniques that will be used in the up-coming performance, Harvesting Pomegranate Dreams.? The focus will be on gesturing with different puppets and puppet styles, working with a variety of scrim types and forms, experimenting with film projection and light and gathering imagery for future works.
The title harkens to pomegranates as one of the world?s oldest known fruits and first found in ancient Persia and then grown through the world including India, China, southern Europe and the Americas, and cited in many ancient texts such as the Book of Exodus and Homeric Hymns.? Harvesting Pomegranate Dreams is a sequence of dreams and puppet tales, inspired by lullabies, texts, and folktales from the lands of pomegranates. The final piece which will be presented in 2013 will be a collection of vignettes, each performed with different styles of puppetry and with different visual aesthetics yet all emanating from the dream of a young girl.
Harvesting Pomegranate Dreams was envisioned by?Tori Ralston and her Theater of Performing Objects, a puppetry and object theater company featuring all types of puppets, specializing in marionettes, shadow puppets and Bunraku. The stated mission of Theater of Performing Objects is to remind the world of the importance of play and curiosity in this age of anxiety.
As part of the Process Series, the audience is encouraged to stay after the performances for a discussion and participate in a dialogue with the creators as a way to assist in the development of this new work.
ABOUT
Harvesting Pomegranate Dreams is part of The Process Series which provides a positive atmosphere at UNC for artists who are in the throes of creating important new work and for students and the community to learn about the creative process. The Process Series was founded by Joseph Megel, an instructor in UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Communication Studies, who has spent the last 20 years focusing on the direction and development of new works for theatre, film and video.? The Process Series is dedicated to the development of new and significant works in the performing arts and features professionally mounted developmental performances of new works in progress. The mission of the series is to illuminate the ways in which artistic ideas take form, to follow artists and performers as they explore and discover and to examine the unique creative process for each artist presented. Dear John,
?
I recently reconnected with an old college friend after not being in touch for over twenty-five years. (We are both men.) As we were reminiscing over a few beers, we got to talking about a situation that was the cause of a lot of heartbreak for me back in the day, but that I had pretty much forgotten about. He cleared up an old mystery for me, though, although I?m not sure it wouldn?t have been better if it remained unsolved!
?
Back in those days, I had an enormous crush on a young woman I did a lot of idealistic volunteer work with through one of the groups on campus. I don?t think she was interested in me, but I was crazy about her, and, making up with humor what I lacked in good looks and charisma, I actually got her to agree to go out on a date with me. It was definitely the highlight of my college career. We had a lot of fun, a lot of laughs, and when the evening ended, I had high hopes for a follow-up. But that was not to be. Suddenly, this girl would have nothing to do with me. In those prehistoric days before social media and cell phones, it was relatively easy to disappear from someone?s life if you wanted to, and that?s what she did. She quit the volunteer group we were in, which was my only regular form of contact with her, and I didn?t even have a phone number for her once that year ended and she changed her living arrangements. I was terribly hurt ? devastated ? but it was obvious that for some reason, what had seemed promising was finished before it got started. I knew she had an ex-boyfriend that was always trying to get back together with her, and I assumed that?s what she decided to do and it was easier to just vanish than give me the bad news. I drank myself to sleep for a couple of months, then moved on. Eventually, I stopped thinking about her altogether.
?
Back to reconnecting with my old buddy. He revealed, in the course of our reunion, that another guy we knew ? barely an acquaintance, certainly not a friend ? also had designs on this girl and told her some truly crazy lies about me ? fighting words kinds of lies ? to undermine our relationship. Well, he not only undermined it, he got his way ? all these years later, they?re married with a family! I still can?t believe finding all this out after so much time has passed.
?
I?m happily married now, too, but this has opened an old wound. I can?t seem to stuff it back into whatever mental box it was stored away in. Thanks to the wonders of the Internet, I have found out where this woman works and her email address. I?m way past the point of wanting to get back together with her, this isn?t about that at all, but I?m angry that there?s someone out there who thinks of me as some kind of deviant because she was lied to by the jerk she MARRIED! Seriously, I?m mad as hell about it when I think about it. I keep going back and forth in my mind as to whether I just write an email to say, ?Guess what ? the real deviant is your HUSBAND!? I just want to set the record straight and at least be on record as denying these things I was accused of. But then part of me says that?s just going to make me seem crazier and it?s better to just let it go. I don?t know what to do, if anything.
?
Sincerely,
Smeared
Dear Smeared,
I can certainly understand how dismayed you must have been to hear this story. How galling! But think about what it would be like for you to appear out of the blue decrying the scurrilous lies that were told about you twenty-five years ago. And then, once your email has been read or your voicemail has been listened to, what?s going to happen: will the liar guiltily look at the floor and mumble, ?Yeah, I did that.? Or will he say to his wife, ?Wow, he?s crazier than ever! He?s becoming unhinged! If he contacts us again, we?ll have to get a restraining order!? Yes, if this is just about getting it off your chest, you can compose a thoughtful email to set the record straight. If it were me, though, I?d be inclined to forget about it. It has been an awfully long time, and you?re happily married now. (And by contrast, she?s married to a manipulative liar.) Let it go.
There is one positive thing that can come out of this if it helps you come to terms with it, though: remember what happened to you and promise yourself that from now on, you won?t make judgments about other people based on things you hear. Form your opinion of someone on your first-hand experience, or don?t form an opinion at all.
Dear John,
?
I?m a female college student. There?s this guy who likes me but the feeling is not mutual. We were lab partners and he got it into his head that because I was nice and friendly toward him, that there was something between us, I guess, but there wasn?t at all. It got to the point where I had to make this clear to him because he was getting kind of weird. But now, anytime I check in someplace on Facebook or whatever, what do you know, half an hour later he?ll be there, too. We?re not friends on FB or anything, but he must have another friend who is friends with me, because he has a habit of showing up where I am without fail! What can I do ? tell him I know what he?s doing and to knock it off? Ignore him? He?s not creepy or scary or anything, it?s just not fun to be having a good time with my friends then to look over and see him moping around. Any advice?
?
Signed,
Not His Friend
Dear Not His Friend,
If you left things on reasonably friendly terms with him, I suppose you could talk with him about this ? perhaps if you remind him that he really has no chance with you, he?ll find better ways to spend his time. But the real solution here is to stop broadcasting your whereabouts. You can certainly let your friends (real friends, not social media ?friends?) know where you?ll be in a way that?s a bit less public. If you insist on doing that, you have to be prepared for the consequences, I?m afraid, and one consequence is that people you?d rather not run into can use that knowledge, too.
I?m glad you say he?s not creepy or scary, because this is behavior I would consider pre-stalkerish. He has a right to hang out wherever he wants if he?s simply minding his own business, but if his behavior begins to worry you or you become the least bit concerned this may be changing from an annoyance to something worse, err on the side of caution and talk to someone in your school?s student affairs or security office about it.
Dear John,
?
What do you do if you accidentally find out something you shouldn?t know, but what you find out can?t be ignored? I?ve been seeing a woman for a while, and despite my making my desires known, she has maintained that she?s not ready to have sex with me far longer than any other woman I?ve dated. (She has also maintained that this is not unusual relationship behavior for her.) I?m pretty crazy about her, so I have simply accepted this, even though she has offered me no indication when she might be ready. The other day I was looking in her bag for a piece of gum (I swear that?s all I was doing because I knew there was some in there) when I found a condom way at the bottom! I was shocked, to say the least. I quickly put it back and put the bag back where it was. I didn?t mention anything, but I can?t get it out of my mind. Should I bring it up? It would be a good way to start a frank conversation I?ve been thinking is overdue ? and I really think so now!
?
Sincerely,
Accidental Snoop
Dear Accidental Snoop,
In my experience, conversations that start out, ?Hey, I was going through your purse?? tend to be really, really brief. Regardless of how innocent your motives were, you shouldn?t have been rifling through her stuff. And then to use that as a pretext for a conversation asking her to account for a condom? Not good. You shouldn?t have been doing what you were doing, so you can?t start a conversation based on anything you found. If you think a talk is long overdue, have a talk. But don?t bring up the condom. That?s none of your business, no matter how accidentally you learned about it.

Recently, Inflammation has been called ?the silent killer? by Time Magazine. They have linked the human inflammatory response to cancer, Alzheimer?s disease, and heart disease, and several other serious health conditions. Time Magazine also discusses the pandemic nature of inflammation that is low grade and systemic. A lot of different factors come into play, when it comes to the fires of inflammation. These factors include tobacco, hypertension, blood cholesterol, sugary foods, sedentary lifestyles, and lack of omega 3 fatty acids.
It is important to eliminate inflammation with an effective total health program. The average person can do many things on their own to put out the flames of inflammation, and improve health in the process. For example, eat plenty of fish and keep track of the calories you consume. Take in more unsaturated and less saturated fats. Eat more antioxidants and avoid food that can cause inflammation. The health of your nervous system can be improved with these steps, and this contributes to overall better health.
One of the most important jobs your nervous system performs is adapting to your internal and external environment. Each day, you are exposed to many different kinds of stress, whether you know it or not. These stresses can be chemical, physical, and emotional, and may be occurring many times per day. Your nervous system is there to help you through stressful times, to maintain good health. If the nervous system is hindered, it cannot perform properly and the body suffers. You may experience a ?fight or flight? situation and this fans the flames of the inflammatory response.
What people don?t realize is that when you fail to adapt to stresses that is what causes subluxations. This lack of coordination or DIS-EASE is the root cause of the majority of health concerns. And your body continues to respond to many events, stresses and trauma?s as if they are still happening. Furthermore, what is referred to as a facilitated neurological pathway is set up. This basically means that once you have gone down a certain path it is easy to go down it again. Once your nerve system subluxates from a particular stressor it takes less and less to create the same response, and less to create an inflammatory response from life events.
Your chiropractor in Denver provides Network Spinal Analysis (sometimes called Network Chiropractic) for your entire body. Once you receive the benefits of chiropractic, it can improve many areas of your life. Problems not usually associated with chiropractic improve. This includes things like blood sugar, joint disorders, digestive, and allergy problems. The nerve system is free to function as it is designed.
Health is not only your state of your lab values, it is your body?s ability to adapt each and every day. If you want to reduce your risk of disease you must focus on creating EASE and eliminating DIS-EASE. That is why maximizing the function of your spine is central to every area of your health. It?s not about your back, it?s about your life.
You can check out practitioners in chiropractic Denver CO by searching online or locally. Locating a chiropractor in Denver is as easy as opening your internet browser.

Need to be 18 to open your own account, otherwise need parental help.
Takes $500 to open a trading account; I would suggest Scottrade and starting with a Roth IRA.
#1 investing rule- LEARN before you start. Amateurs rarely do well, experienced and skilled consistently do well.
Study- a world of books, online tutors and simulators will help you learn without risking money. This is a very complex game. Learn only one area to start, don?t try to grasp it all. Become a basic stock trader; stay away from options, commodities and so on. MOST important skill is knowing how to research and evaluate a stock, but also the Market. Every stock is a winner or loser, depending on what you buy, when you buy it, and when you sell it. Figuring out those things is what makes you a winner or loser. It?s also a test of nerves. If you don?t have some steel in there, you have to play it safe with lower risk investments. If you want to go for bigger returns, you have to be one who can think and act logically when your emotions are screaming at you. Only you can decide what you are cut out for.
NOTHING is better than having a mentor; a successful and experienced investor who believes in you and will be your sounding board and adviser. This can?t be bought, you need to know someone.
To start, try investopedia.com for tutors on terminology and processes of trading. Then, go to simulator.investopedia.com for full practice- you set up an account and practice like live trading, but without real money on the table.
Best book to start- ?Neatest little guide to stock market investing? by Jason Kelly. Written in plain english, no hype or tech-babble. After you have read it you will know what you have read instead of wondering. Available at Amazon, or his website, jasonkelly.com
Patience is a great investing tool, as is critical thinking.. That is a learned mind-skill, the ability to sift fact from opinion and fiction, both of which run rampant in the investing world.

To Start Investing
It takes a long time to learn the stock market and it would help if you read some books from your library and information online. It would also help if you did some practice trading with play money. You can do this by using a watch list in Yahoo Finance > My Portfolio. Just pretend you bought some shares of your choice. If you need help to set-up the watch list, let me know.
No one can tell what you should invest in the market. You need to decide what?s right for you at the present time. Before you start investing, the first thing you need to decide is what risk level you want to take. CDs backed up by the government has about 3-4% annual return for the long term with a low risk. Bonds or Bonds Funds has about 5-7% annual return for the long term with a medium risk. Stocks or Stock Mutual Funds has about 8-10% annual return for the long term with a high risk and are more volatile than Bonds. A person can make more than 10% annual return with the right investment. Usually the more risk you take, the more return you will have, but not always.
The stock market is basally made up of stocks and bonds. Investment managers pick a group of stocks to make a mutual fund or a group of bonds to make a bond fund. They even put a mixture of stocks and bonds together and call it a Growth & Income Fund.
1- MUTUAL FUNDS: Mutual funds have a group of stocks (could be around 100+) invested in different sectors, and manage by a professional. Managers have lots of schooling for investing in stocks, around 8 years. So I think managers can pick stocks better than I can. There are lots of different kinds of mutual funds and they have different risk level. There are 100s of funds that does not charge any fees to buy it?s shares and they are called Noload Funds. There are also some funds called Load Funds that charge about 5% of your investment. You can make a buy or sell order anytime of the day for mutual funds shares but it will not go in affect until the close of the day. Most funds has trading restriction and you may not be able to trade more than 4 times a year. That?s because it makes it hard for the fund to make a good return if there is to much trading in the fund, causing the fund manager to make more buys and sells and keep more cash on hand. Mutual funds are meant for long term investors.
2- STOCKS: Stocks is more volatile than funds unless you spread you money in several different areas and know witch area will do best. There are 10 stock sectors and over 100 sub-sectors to choose from. Stock trading restriction is only a few days, not like mutual funds. If you own stocks, you will need to keep up with all the company?s business so you don?t get stuck with a bad stock. That could take a lots of time. If a person buys just a few stocks he probably is hoping to make a bigger return but he may be taking more risk. If that?s the case, look at the leverage ETFs that represents a large group of stocks. That could be another choice.
3- ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds): ETFs are like a mutual fund but trades like a stock and that is the main differences between ETFs and stocks and mutual funds. There are some ETFs that represents Index?s. An Index is like S&P or DOW. Index?s operate just like a mutual fund with a group of stocks in deferent sectors, manage by professionals. You can?t buy Index?s because they are not for sell. A company owns them. But you can buy a mutual funds or an ETF that has the same stocks as the Index they represent. There are a lots of different kinds of ETFs for someone to choose from. There are some that represent almost every kind of sub-sector. And there are some that have 1x leverage, some have 2x leverage for aggressive investors, and some has 3x leverage for more aggressive investors. If you wish you had more money to invest, the 3x is like having three times the amount of your money in the market. You will make more in an up market but lose more in a down market.
To buy stocks or funds, you need a broker account. You can open an account online and it is free to open. You can find several good discount brokers that charge $8.00 and under per stock trade and no fee on Noload Funds. If you only have a small amount of money to invest, it may be best to start in Noload Funds because of the broker fees. Most broker websites have good research tools. Some popular broker websites are Fidelity, TD Ameritrade, E-trade, Scottrade and others. I think you need a min. of $500 (some sites $2,500) to open a broker account and need to be at lease 18 years old. If you not 18, you might could get your Dad to open an account for you.

I would recommed opening a Think or Swim account at TD ameritrade. This is truly a powerful platform. You and also paper trade with it to practice. If I was you I would start learning about using options to profits from the markets. This is a great way to generate monthly income and limit risk on your stock positions. In fact, you can put positions on where it does not matter if the market goes up or down. The main thing is to manage your risk and manage your portfolio by the numbers (Greeks).

EAST BERNSTADT, Ky. (AP) ? The stories from tornado survivors across the South and Midwest were remarkable: schoolchildren took cover under desks, people hunkered down in a church basement or hid out in a bank vault. One family even piled on top of one another for protection.
One of the most remarkable survivors was a toddler found alive and alone in a field near her Indiana home. Her four immediate family members were among at least 38 people killed by tornadoes that scarred communities scattered across hundreds of miles of the nation's midsection from Alabama to Indiana.
In Kentucky farming country, people remembered friends and family members who were killed in the most powerful storms to hit the eastern part of the state in nearly a quarter-century. Tracy Pitman said she was at home with her husband and 4-year-old grandson when a tornado with winds of up to 130 mph hit.
"I grabbed my baby and I said, 'Baby, lay down' and I got on top of him and my husband got on top of me and it was already happening, just flipping us over and over and over," said Pitman, of East Bernstadt, Ky., a small town 70 miles south of Lexington.
As the accounts were passed around, emergency officials trudged with search dogs past knocked-down cellphone towers and ruined homes looking for survivors in rural Kentucky and Indiana, marking searched roads and homes with orange paint. President Barack Obama offered federal assistance.
The worst damage appeared centered in some hard-hit small towns of southern Indiana and eastern Kentucky's Appalachian foothills. No building was untouched and few were recognizable in West Liberty, Ky., about 90 miles from Lexington, where two white police cruisers were picked up and tossed into City Hall.
"We stood in the parking lot and watched it coming," said David Ison, who raced into a bank vault with nine others to seek safety. "By the time it hit, it was like a whiteout."
The spate of storms was the second in little more than 48 hours, after an earlier round killed 13 people in the Midwest and South. They were the latest in a string of severe-weather episodes that have ravaged the heartland in the past year.
Friday's violent storms touched down in at least a dozen states, killing 19 people in Kentucky, 14 in Indiana, three in Ohio, and one each in Alabama and Georgia.
The National Weather Service said the four twisters to hit Kentucky were the worst in the region in 24 years. In Indiana, an EF-4 tornado ? the second-highest on the Fujita scale that measures tornadic force ? packing 175 mph winds hit the town of Henryville, and stayed on the ground for more than 50 miles. Three tornadoes in Kentucky had wind speeds up to 160 mph.
The storms left behind a trail of shredded sheet metal, insulation, gutted churches and crunched-up cars.
The trailer that was once the home of Viva Johnson's mother was sitting in a graveyard on Saturday, covering the dead alongside downed trees and other debris. "You can't even tell where the headstones are," said Johnson, who lives in Pulaski County, Ky.
In Indiana, a toddler was found alone in a field near her family's home after a tornado hit in New Pekin. Authorities learned Saturday she is the sole survivor of her immediate family, said Cis Gruebbel, a spokeswoman for Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, Ky. The girl's mother, father, 2-month-old sister and 2-year-old brother all died Friday, Washington County Coroner Rondale Brishaber said. The toddler was in critical condition with extended family members at the hospital. Authorities are still trying to figure out how she ended up in the field.
"She is in extremely critical condition," Jack Brough, the girl's grandfather, told The Courier-Journal of Louisville. "She's had a lot of injuries to her head. The doctors told us that the next 24-48 hours are very critical."
About 20 miles east, a twister demolished Henryville, Ind., the birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken founder "Colonel" Harland Sanders. The second story of the elementary school was torn away, one of the city's three schools lost to the weather. The winds also blew out the windows and gutted the Henryville Community Presbyterian Church.
A school secretary said a bus left the city's high school Friday afternoon with 11 children, but the driver turned back after realizing they were driving straight into the storm. The children hid under tables and desks at the school nurse's station when the tornado hit; none were hurt, but the building is a total loss.
The school bus was tossed several hundred yards into the side of a nearby restaurant. Todd and Julie Money were hiding there, having fled their Scottsburg home because it has no basement.
"Unreal. The pressure on your body, your ears pop, trees snap," Todd Money said. "When that bus hit the building, we thought it exploded."
The storms hit as far east as Ohio, where the Ohio River town of Moscow was so decimated that rugs hung from the trees.
In Kentucky, the Rev. Kenneth Jett of the West Liberty United Methodist Church was huddling with four others in the basement as the church collapsed.
The pastor and his wife had just returned to the parsonage when he turned on the TV and saw that the storm coming. Jett yelled to his wife to take shelter in the basement of the church next door, where they were joined by two congregants and a neighbor.
The last one down was Jett's wife, Jeanene.
"I just heard this terrific noise," she said. "The windows were blowing out as I came down the stairs."
They only had some bumps and bruises, able to escape the rubble through a basement door.
Friday's tornado outbreak had been forecast for days; meteorologists at the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center had said the day would be one of a handful this year that warranted its highest risk level. The weather service issued 297 tornado warnings and 388 severe thunderstorm warnings from Friday through early Saturday.
In April, when tornadoes killed more than 240 people in Alabama, it issued 688 tornado warnings and 757 severe thunderstorm warnings from Texas to New York, said Greg Carbin, warning coordination meteorologist at the storm prediction center.
In Harvest, Ala., which was hit last April, Cody Stewart said he was done owning a home for the time being after his house was damaged a second time. In his house for less than two months with repairs still incomplete, a tornado on Friday ripped the roof away and slung it into the backyard. This time, the damage is beyond repair.
"I think I'm going to live in an apartment awhile. I'm not superstitious, but it just kind of seems there's a path here and I don't want to be in it again, and I hope other people make the same choice," Stewart said.

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio (AP) ? This state's Super Tuesday primary is proving to be the perfect microcosm of the nation's unruly race for the Republican presidential nomination: Mitt Romney is spending lots of money, Rick Santorum is aggressively courting conservatives and Newt Gingrich is counting on big ideas to swing votes his way.
Of the 10 states weighing in on Tuesday, Ohio offers the hottest contest. And with its diverse population, reputation as a presidential battleground and preoccupation with the same economic worries that nag the nation at large, Ohio seems destined to foreshadow the shape of the campaign as it heads toward November.
"You seem to always be the center of the political universe in America," Santorum declared Friday night during a packed campaign stop in this northeastern Ohio town set along Lake Erie.
And despite the vast territory in play across the country, from Alaska and Idaho to Vermont, Virginia and Georgia, Romney will sleep in Ohio every night until Tuesday. It's that important to him.
Even so, the race was playing out in similar fashion in the other states with contests Tuesday. The former Massachusetts governor and his allies were flooding the airwaves, outpacing his rivals in every Super Tuesday state except in North Dakota, where Santorum was alone on the air but spending less than $8,000. Romney campaigned in Washington on Friday, the day before the state's caucuses, as he closed a Western swing.
Romney has much of Ohio's Republican establishment behind him after years of courting the party's county chairmen and donors.
"When a party chairman gets a call early on from someone perceived as the front-runner and they ask you to sign on as a county chairman, it's easy to say yes and it's hard to say no," said Mark Munroe, the Mahoning County GOP chief who is leading Romney's efforts in the northeastern Ohio county. "We've seen the Romney campaign in action since late last year. He was able to start early and that makes such a huge difference."
Romney's camp insists he does not need to win Ohio to get the presidential nomination or even to keep alive the expectation that he eventually will. Losing here, however, would drive persistent doubts about the strength of Romney's candidacy after a closer-than-expected race in Michigan and a string of comments that have drawn attention to his personal wealth.
Campaigning Friday night in Cleveland, Romney delivered his standard speech and kept his focus on the economy, though he cited trade ? a critical issue in a manufacturing state that's been hurt by foreign competition
"When we have trade with other nations it's good for us ... we do better as a society. We're able to have more stuff and have a more prosperous life," he said. "But that's only the case as long as the people we trade with don't cheat. And in the case of China, they're cheating." The crowd cheered, with many nodding their heads.
Romney, who's visited Ohio, North Dakota, Idaho and Washington state in the past two days, also said the campaigning allows him to meet people who aren't regularly in the news. "When you get to do what I do and you meet, you know, average, ordinary citizens like ourselves, well, you get a sense of what is really at the heart and at the core of the American people," he said.
Figures provided to The Associated Press show Romney's campaign is spending more than $1.5 million in television ads this week in Ohio and his allies are on the air with almost $1.5 million. In total, Romney and his supporters planned to spend more than $3.8 million on cable and broadcast television ads.
His rivals dismiss the spending.
"The Romney organization is nothing more than money," said Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, an early Romney backer who defected to Santorum just as the former Pennsylvania senator's late rise captured the interest of conservative leaders who were lukewarm, at best, about Romney's record.
Santorum and his allies are spending only $796,000 in total on Ohio. Yet a Quinnipiac University poll released Friday found Santorum polling at 35 percent support and Romney at 31 percent support ? essentially a tie.
"When Ohio whispers, people listen," Santorum said Friday night. "When Ohio shouts, 'We want a conservative,' this country will stand up and join you."
Ohio's Republican electorate is similar to that of the most recent hard-fought state, Michigan, containing both blue-collar, rural voters as well as churchgoers focused heavily on social issues. Here, as in that fellow Rust Belt state narrowly won by Romney, the economy dominates voters' concerns, and Romney and Santorum both were playing to them.
And, as they could in Michigan, voters in Ohio will be able to declare party affiliation at the polls.
"We've got the same problems as everyone else does," said Gary Green, a 56-year-old Chillicothe business owner who attended a Santorum event Friday but still is leaning toward candidate Ron Paul. "We need jobs."
Sen. Rob Portman, a Romney supporter who plans to campaign with him at four events on Saturday, said Romney "doesn't have to win in Ohio, but it sure would help."
"I don't think people in Ohio thought this primary was going to be a big deal," Portman said. "They thought this thing would be wrapped up in Florida."
It isn't clear whether Santorum has any paid staff on the ground. As is the case elsewhere, Santorum is relying on volunteers and local leaders such as DeWine to power his campaign. Santorum's top aides still don't have a national campaign headquarters. Highway rest stops and advisers' hotel rooms are the base of their ragtag yet oddly durable operation.
His campaign faces another problem in Ohio. He failed to qualify for the ballot in three congressional districts, and party officials said Friday he filed an incomplete slate of delegates in another six districts, costing him up to nine delegates more. The state Republican Party would make the final determination on what to do with unallocated delegates based on party rules.
Santorum hosted his rally late Friday evening, hoping to generate the enthusiasm that helped him win the Iowa and Minnesota caucuses, as well as the Colorado primary and Missouri's nonbinding primary. He'll spend Saturday in the state as well, before traveling to Tennessee and Oklahoma. He's tentatively scheduled to return to the state Monday and stay through Super Tuesday.
Gingrich is short on cash and has been camped out in Georgia trying to prevent an embarrassing home state loss on Tuesday. But he's still a player of sorts in Ohio, where he plans one day of campaigning as well as a 30-minute, policy-thick cable television commercial about energy, an ad costing him $2,750 to run five times through Monday. The poll that found Romney and Santorum vying for the Ohio lead put Gingrich at 17 percent.
Paul, the favorite of the libertarian wing of his party, had 12 percent support in the poll. He planned no television ads or serious campaigning yet was sure to draw his fervent supporters to the polling stations for a campaign that has yet to win a state.
Gingrich planned to visit Ohio on Saturday to appear in a forum with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and give remarks to a National Rifle Association event in Findlay and a GOP dinner in Bowling Green.
Campaigning in Savannah, Ga., Gingrich called Romney the "inside, establishment candidate" who would go to Washington "to manage the decay," and said Santorum would not change the status quo, either.
"We're not worried about losing Georgia," said Rick Tyler, a former Gingrich aide who is with a pro-Gingrich political committee that is spending almost $740,000 in advertising in Georgia. "But at the same time, he has to do well in Georgia." Tyler described the state as "a lot like South Carolina," where Gingrich pulled off his only victory to date.
In Bellevue, Wash., Romney implored supporters to come out for the Saturday caucuses, promising them "it won't take a long time, it'll just make a big difference." His Western campaigning included stops in North Dakota and Idaho. Massachusetts, Oklahoma and Tennessee are among the other Super Tuesday states.

Much has been written lately about the achievement gap, which is the difference in school performance between one group of students and another, be that based on gender, race or socioeconomic status. The gap can be measured in a variety of ways, including standardized test scores, dropout rates and college-enrollment and completion rates.
The most recent reference to the achievement gap was in a series of recently-released reports indicating that while the educational achievement gap between black and white students has measurably decreased over the last few decades, it has during the same time increased between rich and poor students. In other words, how a child performs in school seems to be less correlated to skin color, and more correlated to the income of the family into which he or she is born. Sounds like a ?good news/bad news? story to me, with the bad being really bad. I say that because I have always thought of the American education system as the great leveler, in that it didn?t matter what a student?s household income was once they walked through the schoolhouse doors on the first day of kindergarten. From that point on, every child had a shot at creating a decent and productive life for him or herself, if only they applied themselves. This was certainly true for my family. My father grew up in the Great Depression, his father passed away suddenly when my dad was only eight years old, leaving my grandmother with five small children to care for. They struggled, but all of them made it through school and went on to very successful careers in a variety of fields. That was likely due to a number of things, including my grandmother?s ingenuity, strong work ethic, and faith in God, but I have to believe the American education system was central to this outcome as well.
So why are things heading in the right direction in terms of race and the achievement gap, but in the wrong direction in terms of family income? Reading various commentaries about the reports, many theories abound, but the one that struck me as most valid was from a Nobel Prize winner in Economics, Professor James Heckman of the University of Chicago. According to The New York Times, ?Heckman?argues that parenting matters as much as, if not more than, income in forming a child?s cognitive ability and personality?.?
I agree, and reading this reminded me of a different but related report which came out last November, published by the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), which according to its website, is ?an international study which began in the year 2000. It aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students in participating countries/economies.? The United States is one of the 70 countries participating.
In its November report, PISA?s main findings were that students whose parents often read books with them during their first year of primary school showed markedly higher scores at age 15 than students whose parents read with them infrequently or not at all, and this is regardless of the family?s socio-economic background. (emphasis mine) Further down in the report, it is stated, ?The good news coming from analyses of PISA data is that it does not require a PhD or unlimited hours for parents to make a difference. In fact, many child-parent activities that are associated with better reading performance among students involve relatively little time and no specialized knowledge. What these activities do demand, though, is genuine interest and active engagement.?
This tells me that while we are and should be spending a great deal of time, money and energy figuring out how to improve American schools and hire great teachers, a major part of the problem is not being addressed, i.e. asking that parents step up to the plate and do their part in their child?s education. In fact, more than one veteran teacher has told me that there is a definite trend of requiring schools to take on things that were traditionally the responsibility of the family. It was funny but sad when one teacher stated, ?I feel like the next thing we will be asked to do is formally adopt each student??
The report?s last paragraph concludes, ?The score point difference in reading that is associated with parental involvement is largest when parents read a book with their child, when they talk about things they have done during the day, and when they tell stories to their children.? If more parents do that, and put limits on access to X-Box, Wii, television, and Facebook, I am certain that the educational achievement gap as it pertains to socioeconomics will start heading in the right direction, and we will have the best of all worlds: success in school won?t be related to your skin color, and it won?t be related to household income. It will be related to how much work a student puts in, and to how much their parents care about them to do the same.
